I have a new blog post up about providing supplemental calcium for your nesting birds, and purple martins in particular. It's easy, it's cheap and it really helps them out!

I bought a 30 pound bag of Oyster shells for seven dollars at a farm store. Pretty cheap.

For some reason, they don't seem to care for them here. I have seen 2 males pick up a shell or two in 2 years time. I don't get it. At that rate I have enough shells to hold me until I'm too old to remember what a martin is!

Mike - it's pretty cheap here too, and I used to put out piles of it in my yard. But after finding my martins raiding my compost pile for the egg shells there, it became obvious that's what they preferred.

My husband laughs because well, our *guests* always get what they want. LOL
