I have seen a lot of post on Martins having trouble getting in the SREH entrances and getting caught by Hawks. I know that a lot of folks have them and have good success with them. I have Troyer Tunnels with Conley II entrances. I also have a couple of Hawks that come through, but have never lost any Martins too them. The first year I put a roof over the opening made from siding mainly to keep water out. But a unattended result was when a Martin was setting on the porch a Hawk went for it and hit the roof and bounced off. Another thing I do is when I see a Hawk I go outside with my Air Rifle without a Pellet in it and shoot it and that scares the Hawk off. Now all I have to do is go out with the Gun and the Hawk will fly off. No I don't have a lot of time to spend watching my Martins but my work shop is fairly close to my Racks, so this helps. Just an observation.

Great observations Dave!
It definitely makes sense, that having some type of roof/overhang, would make it harder for a hawk to pluck a Martin off a porch, when they're making one of their high speed attacks.

Dave, I hope you have a cheap air rifle and not a high quality one that you paid dearly for. If it is a spring gun, one of the worst things you can do with it is to shoot it without a pellet in it. The spring is expecting to have some resistance caused by the pellet. Of course, if it is not a springer, I don't think this matters, but honestly, I know very little of CO2 and PCP guns as they don't interest me.

Good luck with the hawk.
Don't ever, ever give up. It will happen.

About the Porch Roof! I make them 1 inch wider than the Porch and 3 1/2 inches out from the Tunnel and bend a 1 inch "L" down to pop rivet to tunnel. Another thing is that the Male likes to sit on the roof to watch his Honey
The Air Rifle I use is an old Blue Streak I bought in the late 70s. It is about wore out. Most of the time I don't have to shoot it, Just carry it with me. I think they know it's a Gun and they turn the other direction.
Let me make one thing clear. I have not and never will shoot any Bird except S&S.
