I had two martins late today

Postby Emil Pampell-Tx » Wed Jan 17, 2018 10:13 pm

I went outside right before dark, saw a bird on my nestbox trap. It was a male martin sitting on the porch. There was another martin inside of the trap, so I released the martin inside the trap, but did not see it well enough to tell if it was a male or a female. The male martin returned to the trap but could not get in so it also flew away. I think that they returned later or will be back tomorrow AM. I could not stay outside to watch for their return..I was very happy to see them return. I then raised one gourd rack with about 20 gourds, so they now have something to enter that is higher...I was not expecting them, it was 12deg this morning, will be about 20 to 25 tonight.

Thanks for the report. My colony is only 4.3 hours North of you and I'm watching the skies ever so closely these days. Specially into the weekend where the temps will be in the 60's.

Congats! Emil

But BRRRR those guys will be hungry and chilly. Spring is springing though in the south.

Supplemental feeding plays a major role in western Pennsylvania. Finally got my 1st pair in 2009 after 28 years of effort. 3 pairs in 2010. 17 pairs in 2011. 35 pairs and 150 young in 2012 & 2013. Plus a new 22 pair colony right down the road from me.

I am so envious. Wisconsin has a long time to wait for them yet. How exciting for you, tho.

Hi Emil glad to see you on this forum again! I know you will soon have many more martins than the "teasers" that you had there. I am hoping that this year will bring me more martins than the one pair that nested last summer, but it was sure a joy to watch that pair raise and fledge four young.

Martin Colony History: I have had my martin colony on the dam of one of my ponds for nine years. The colony has grown each year, but I am now concentrating on helping friends and acquaintances who have shown interests in martins. We have helped 5 friends establish their own colonies in the last two years, with more to come this spring. My colony consists of two T-14's with 8 Troyer gourds attatched to each T-14, a Troyer gourd rack with 12 gourds, for a total of 56 nest cavities. I am having serious predation issues with hawks and owls and am experimenting with various hawk guards and "screens".

Amazing that martins are already arriving at our southern landlords ! We are having a seriously tough winter after 3 very mild winters here in southeastern Ohio. It is exciting to hear about the birds moving into south Texas and south Fla. !

Just having looked at the wind pattern it appears they are in our favor. South winds blowing up from South America along the Coast of Mexico straight through Texas and on up to Indiana, Ohio and that region. So just maybe...

I am now in full lookout mode since Emil's report along with the warm up and the favorable winds.

BTW. I'm in Plano, TX which is the DFW area.

mwren, noticed in your signature you've been experiencing owl predation.
Do you have tunnels on your T14 compartments? If not you may want to
consider adding them. Believe Troyer tunnels on all my cavities may be
making a big difference in lowering GHO success.

Emil,

Have you seen other Martins in addition to the one you reported?
