Heat and Late Nest in TX

Temps are scheduled to be above 100 deg. the next few days and “feels like” temps even higher. We had a very late nest of four young but have already lost one since Friday. They are about 13 days old and not scheduled to fledge until the end of July. Thankfully parents are still feeding. All of our ...

Re: roost in Round Rock, texas this year

I just checked the Travis Audubon website about the roost. I wonder if the birds that normally go to Austin have moved to Round Rock this year because so far no one has found it! It would be so cool to have them closer to all of us  This is what they wrote: Purple Martin Parties 2018 Dates: Ju...

Re: Heat Index

Thank you for answering this question. We have all Troyer gourds with tunnels. Maybe we could stick an ice pack under the nest if needed. I don’t think there is room in the bowl anywhere else. All your suggestions have been very helpful and I appreciate you taking the time to help. We’ve been landlo...

Re: Heat Index

We have two poles. The gourds on one already have a shadeboard on it but the new nesters decided to use the other pole without one  Hubby already made a trip to Home Depot for more to cover their gourd. Not only did they pick that pole but also a gourd that faces away from our view of the entr...

Re: Heat Index

We have a nest left which is due to fledge in about ten days. We thought that was it BUT while doing check five days ago found two new eggs in another gourd. Today there are four. We’ve never had any this late. Based on calculations the earliest they would fledge is Aug. 6! I’m very concerned. Our g...

Re: 15th year underway at the farm

Ha, ha about the dog  I realized how well the shock worked when I saw a squirrel go to the pole and touch it. He jumped about 2’ in the air as he did an about face and took off like his life depended on it. It was pretty funny.

Re: 15th year underway at the farm

Brad-Al, We are at 13 years now and I relate to all that you said, especially about not getting so anxious anymore. We have learned so much over the years and each year brings something new. We had a very early arrival of two martins this year on 2/5 and not until yesterday did several more arrive. ...

Re: Too many trees for martins?

The first year we put up a martin pole it was completely free of trees, had a great open flyway from all directions and was near our lake. We thought it was a perfect spot. We saw not one martin checking it out. On the advice of our mentor, we moved it closer to the back of our house, about 20’ away...

Re: Purple Martins are back!

Louise, We had two show up today and they are spending the night. I just happened to be looking out the window that faces our gourd racks this afternoon and lo and behold saw one flying around. I jumped up so excited and yelled at my husband to hurry and open a few gourd entrances  . The little...

Re: Season Two of the PMCA's Nest Cam is now live!

Oh good. Just looked and saw six too. Hopefully it is the other baby. It's sitting in the entrance. I noticed this is your first year to have martins. Congratulations. I have no doubt you'll have more next season. We started with one pair too and the next year had several more. Once the word gets ou...

Only five so far tonight too. I'm sure it is not uncommon to lose one after they first fledge but it is still sad :-(.

PMCA Camera Malfunctioning

There must be something on the lens. All it shows is a grayish picture with light streaming in the entrance. Martins still there as I can hear them.

Re: Heat Advisory Central TX

Mark, The year we had the terrible drought we also had birds that tried to fledge early. It was very frustrating to put them back in the gourd only to find them on the ground again soon after. Yes, extreme heat and parasites can cause early fledging. Sevin has been a debated topic on the forum but w...

Re: Heat Advisory Central TX

The heat advisory continues today. Hubby made a shade cover on the pole with babies. Fortunately he had vented our gourds already. We are checking them daily. The parents are still feeding. Also had the opportunity to talk with a PM rehabber that took one of our babies last year in July after parent...
