Not sure what to do....

I have an 8 troyer gourd pole that are all open and 2 t-14 houses that is all closed to keep out sparrows and BB. Today I had 3 martins hanging around and one spending time inside one gourd. Should I open some or all the t-14's to give more options? Thank you in advance

Re: 2nd year and trying

flyin-lowe, I've shot it into my pond and it has more shot in a round than one would think. But as you said, I don't think it's very powerful outside 20 feet but I'm afraid to let the wife shoot me for proof..lol. They're not cheap but I've missed so many times at this mirage sparrow couple last yea...

Re: 2nd year and trying

The 22 LR #12 shot is like a shotgun shell for 22's. They aren't that powerful but like you say, I don't want to add ventilation. I don't think it would penetrate a plastic gourd but.......

Re: 2nd year and trying

Lol, had some cedar and the T-14 looked like a fun project.....yeah, I'm a martin poser from the road. I spent many an hour waiting and watching these 3 and now I'm hooked. I do have the starling resistant entrance holes on all openings but some starlings didn't get the memo. I bought some 22 LR #12...

Re: 2nd year and trying

Thanks, last year I had 3 flying around and checking things out. I was sitting in the barn and found a dawn song recording on YouTube I think. I didn't think any martins were around and started playing it through my phone. A Martin flew from a gourd and never saw another go in any cavity after that....

2nd year and trying

Hello everyone, My barn is approximately 10 to 25 feet from 3 Martin house poles. I'm in and out a lot during spring and summer and was wondering if this would be a problem in getting martins to stay? Also I'm in Northern Ohio, 10 miles from Lake Erie, and not sure when to open the houses and how ma...

Re: Can't believe it, but I have one hanging around

Really like this thread and rooting for your success! Great pics and a beautiful pole of houses. Not sure what or why but, It makes me feel a touch sad? I've read this thread to my wife and stated after "I hope he gets a colony even before I do". Have I gone nuts?

P.S. tie your shoes...lol

Re: What to do.....

Thanks for the replies! I'm using a pellet gun and it's not consistent in its placement or I'm just a bad shot. I fear the travel of a 22 shooting at those elevated angles. I will try to make a trap and get after them.

Is it too late in Ohio for attracting a breeding pair? Thanks again!

What to do.....

Hello all, I have been trying to shoot a pair of relentless Sparrows, at my T-14 and 4 gourd pole, on an off for over a month. I've dumped 2 nests with eggs from the T-14 and they still keep trying. Two days ago I closed all openings on the 14 and left the gourds open. I was working (with ear buds j...

Re: worried newbe

Time has slipped away but did move the back house to the front. I still need to move the other house away from the fence and put it on a new pole. I started a 3 1/2" round galvanized pole that was a pay phone mount. Am I to late for any hope this year? Here are a couple pics of what's done and what'...

Re: worried newbe

Are martins messy and having them within 5 to 10 feet of the driveway a no-no? They're birds, they poop on the fly and while sitting whenever and wherever they choose. They will develop preferred fly-ways and leave "presents" along them. Some folks with large colonies wear hard hats. -- John I know...

Re: worried newbe

Well, I'm making a new pole (and moving it's location) for the house by the fence. Currently it's a 29' aluminum mast from a small sailboat that sways more than I like. Also moving the house in the garden to the front somewhere................I was hoping another year wouldn't slip away but it's not...

I would love to cut down those 3 messy and water s-sucking willows but they are my neighbor's.

Re: worried newbe

That's it! Maybe 2 cars an hour average on this country road. Just behind the dock is the fence and the t-14 is mounted on the left side closer to the driveway. How important is the distance from a human structure and what is that max distance? If I mounted one or both between the drive and pond wil...

Re: worried newbe

Yes, I see all four photos. In the 1st photo, south to the perpendicular street is my 2nd pond (it's very light colored water in photo) that's between the really straight driveway to the west and the dark colored pond (same color as my pond back at the house) to the east. I have a log cabin close to...

Re: worried newbe

Thank you TheSmiths, the 1st pic is of our house approx 1800 feet from the road. This is where one t-14 in a raised garden bed is located. It is really closed in back here and as I have recently learned, not ideal at all. If you can post the area between the street and the woods is the place I hope ...

Re: DIY winch system?

Your Welcome Doug. As I said before, I think the house you have by the fence looks good to me. I tried to post a video of my first colony 2018 but I wasn't able. Might be my be because of my computer skills are not the best. If you your interested in seeing it you will also see I'm kind of close to ...
