Don,
That's got to be a very enticing sight for martins. I'm sure as the rest fly in over the next few weeks you'll have a lot more takers.

I can't imagine how any martin would turn that down. Really nice job.

You sure have a pretty piece of property. Is your home on the site too?

Couple of pics I took. Not the best quality. Taken from my camera/phone. These were the little thugs that fought it out this morning.

Jeanne- Lot's of hawks in the New Orleans area. I've been seeing them nearly everytime I work along the river. Yesterday a big red looking one swooped down on the martins at the nesting site at the lock to get into the industrial canal (9th ward). I also noticed a few crows chasing the martins too. ...

Watched 2 males fight it out

At one of the established nesting site in the New Orleans area I was about 15 feet from a martin house and watched two males fight it out. One was inside a nest and another popped in after the two seemed to stare it out for a few minutes. A female was also hanging outside the hole too- watching both...

Pretty impressive. I'm assuming you have to use a ladder to check nests (if you plan on doing that) and the whole units tilts down for end of season stowage/cleaning. I'll bet the close proximity to the lake will be well received by the martins. Had you the same setup before and added to it? Or did ...

Wow I didn't realize that. I think the special I was watching took place in Missouri.

I can see why the Amish would enjoy having Martins around. I don't think they use pesticicdes.

The Amish and Purple Martins

About a week ago I was watching a show on the Amish people and how some of the younger kids are breaking away from their cultural and religious upbringings. Maybe some of you saw it on Discovery or maybe A&E. Something that caught my eye was a scene with quite a few T-14s along the edge of a cornfie...

Sounds good Joe. It sure was a pretty sight. I was able to get really close to the birds and they are so fun to watch. The sounds they make are so interesting too. Well at least I made a new friend down the street. He's very interested in taking care of his birds too. He had told me a couple weeks a...

There's a family about half a mile away with a single 8 unit purple martin house on a pulley. I drove by this morning to see if they were having any luck and as I peddled closer I could hear the tell-tale sounds of martins. 2 pretty males swooped over me and I could see another 4 flying around. So t...

2 adult males reported in Mandeville, La

Bo Kite called me this morning to let me know he spotted 2 adult males at the Lakeshore Dr. colony in Mandeville La. This is the 3rd year of the project and we're in the process of reinstalling the units now. We reinstalled 5 units (of 27) about four weeks ago. This afternoon we hope to have another...

Saw a nice looking male today

We were driving to a work site today going towards Gonzales La and I saw a house with a nice purple martin setup. Looked to be a well tended setup with homemade PVC tubes for nests and also gourds. Anyway perched on one of the porches was a sharp looking adult male. The sun was shining and he sure l...

spring powered rifles- even Beemans can break. My R1 broke a spring after about 3 years. I replaced the spring and later something in the cocking lever broke. Simple fix but they do break. My cheap yet accurate Gamo spring rifle has never broken but I had to buy better parts to make it shoot accurat...

Hi David, Yea I looked at some used scuba tanks but all the ones I found were too expensive so I will wait on that and just use the pump or the co2. This is the scope LE AccuShot 4-16X56 30mm w/ EZ Tap also look for "buddy tanks". Much smaller than the full size scuba tanks, and less expensive. The...

Donna, try to find a used scuba tank and maybe a place to refill it. Craigslist is a good place to start.

Did you decide on a scope?

have fun!

"Love Bugs"

In the south we usually get a couple of outbreaks a year of the "love bug" and I wondered if the purple martins feasted on these "pain in the rear" bugs.

I dread when they start swarming.

the other method to the manual air pump is to get a full size scuba tank to refill the rifle. You can get it filled at either a dive shop or maybe a place that handles welding bottles. Where I live the dive shops refill the scuba tanks for 7 bucks. the scuba tank will refill the marauder about 45 ti...

I'd get the .22 mainly due to the fact that it gives more knowdown power, is more forgiving on small game due to a hit just off the vitals. Makes a bigger hole. As accurate as the .177. Pellets are easy to find like .177. Anything made for .177 is available in .22. It is less affected by the wind on...

Well, I have not had any problems with S&S this winter, I guess because I only feed sunflower seeds and have the shotgun handy. I know though as soon as I decide to open the bird houses the ones up the road at the neighbors will be down here pronto and the war will be on!! I am trying out a new wea...
