today at work I was standing under one of the four martin houses we have set up (New Orleans) near the river and was blown away at how all the noises the martins were making sounded so much like the day time chatter CD. I could have recorded it and used it for my own- that's how good it sounded. It'...

Now that I have the bug Identified, I was able to find out some interesting info. http://lakewhatcom.wsu.edu/gardenkit/unwantedpests/cranefly.htm http://insects.tamu.edu/fieldguide/bimg215.html Note--- I've also started seeing dragonflies for the first time this year (starting yesterday). I've seen ...

Thanks! The other day a lone Mockingbird was eating them one after the other while perched on a branch outside of my office. The bird just sat there and snatched them as they flew around his or her head. It was really funny to watch. I should have video'd the event. The martins seem to be doing the ...

Can someone ID this insect?

These little critters are all over the place this week and I'm pretty sure the purple martins out here are eating them up. I see the martins coming in really low all over the neighborhood and I'm sure this bug is tops on the menu. When I looked on the side of my house I could see nearly a cloud of t...

The Dawnsong is a very good tool to use very early in the game, but once martins actually find your site, the site, its location and quality of housing will have to speak for itself. Agreed-- I'm playing daytime chatter in the day. I have it turned down when they are overhead. And yeah-- a few week...

I'll experiment a little. I'm sure you all know how exciting it is to get your first birds at your site. I bought these gourds and pole last Aug. It was too late by then, and I just wanted to give it a shot. So of course, waiting for all those many months for my own martins had me really excited. An...

i like that idea keith.
And I agree that it's not necessary after established. I see too many people that don even use it and have no prolems attracting. I think it's best maybe the first weeks of getting them to your house or gourds. After, I think it wouldn5 matter at all.

thats a good point. If anyone else can add to this, I'd appreciate it too. It makes sense that if the martins know I have a house up, then maybe I don't need to play the CDs.

There's plenty that have seen the gourds now.

yeah- i'm looking at getting tunnels too. and yes mine are big bo gourds. Next ones I get will be the bo 11 models. Those are really nice.

my wife and i were watching a few minutes ago and one male ASY flew by and slowed down right over the gourd and circled over them once then continued on.

yeah- the tree is much farther away than what appears. The closest tree is about 40 to 50 feet away.

aborted landing videos

Here's the two videos I shot yesterday of two attempted landings on my gourd setup. Not sure if the decoy spooked the martin or if the wind was causing the gourds and perches to move around too much. He seemed spooked at the last moment. Today I have no decoys on the perches as a little experiment. ...

I actually thought of removing the decoys after I saw two aborted landings. Each time it appeared the martins was frightened or startled at the last second. I'll do that first thing in the morning. I've never read anything other than decoys being a good thing, but it won't hurt to experiment. I'll d...

by the end of the day there were well over a dozen flying around my house. They seemed to be feasting on these giant mosquito looking bugs (we call them mosquito hawks around here) that are really numerous at the moment. I had a few attempted landings on my gourds but none did. I had daytime chatter...

You know, having proteges is pretty nice. You could have them come over and do all sorts of chores. ;)

I've got three to four circling over my gourds!!

was sitting inside near the backyard windows and out the corner of my eye I saw a marting gliding over the backyard. I went out side and there are three to four flying over the neighborhood right behind my house. As I was watching, one male asy tried to land on my gourd setup! but I think the two de...

Has anyone spotter sub-adults yet?

Just curious if anyone (except Florida) has seen SY martins. I'm in LA and at two fairly populated nesting areas I've not seen any yet.

I wasn't sure how accurate the scout report page is and thought mybe they are out there, but no official report.

I wonder if your gourds can be spotted on google maps w/satellite imagery? what's the nearest intersection to your place?
