Re: Temple, Texas

Could be a rest stop but more likely this year’s youngsters from around your area checking out housing for next year. I wouldn’t take it down just yet or you might miss the opportunity of a houseful next season  .

Re: When do Martins leave Central Texas

Wow, I got confused as to why a ten year old post made it back here until I noticed someone found it and replied yesterday. Our last nest this year fledged two days ago and a parent brought at least one back last night to their gourd. The most interesting thing that has happened in the past week is ...

Re: HELP

RR, We had a late nest last year that we helped through the month of July. It was brutally hot with temps of 108 some days. So you know the “feels like” temps were even higher. We put ice packs under the nest 2-3 times a day and my husband made a large shade cloth to put over the top. The parents we...

Re: T14 Full

We had a pair of SY’s lay eggs really late in the season last year. Don’t know if you remember how hot it was in July, like 106+ some days. We helped them by putting ice packs in the gourd, sometimes up to three times a day. Even though ALL the other martins left for the roost, the SY pair stayed an...

Re: T14 Full

RR, We were very surprised to find a nest with 5 martin eggs in one of our gourds 8 days ago ago. Interesting it is the same gourd that was the first with 5 eggs last year and they hatched on 4/29. We don’t know when the first egg was laid this year but it was at least 13 days ago so the timing will...

Re: Hawk

We’ve had two decoys knocked over. Didn’t see it happen. They were on nice and tight so we don’t know if it was a hawk or owl. They do seem to work.

Re: Hawk

Keith wrote: “It just seems to me that the Hawk populations are rapidly increasing.” I have to agree with that statement and also RR’s comments about so much new housing. I don’t remember seeing nearly as many hawks in years past like we do now. We used to basically be in the country but every bit o...

Re: Hawk

Yeah, one for the Martins!
This morning a bunch chased a hawk, literally attacking him as he tried to get away. They were higher than he was and kept dive bombing him and hitting him. He was saying “get away, get away”

Re: Hawk

Well I just happened to look out the window and a hawk was sitting on top of a gourd, AGAIN! He must have chased one in. I’m pretty sure they came in earlier since it’s close to dark. I didn’t have a chance to “put them to bed” tonight. I’m not a cussing person but I sure feel like it right now. It’...

Re: Hawk

How about using a pellet gun but not with the intention to shoot a hawk, but far enough away from him just to scare him away? Is that legal? I don’t want to get into trouble and I definitely don’t want to kill one. I couldn’t in all good conscience. They are beautiful but I love my martins more. To ...

Re: Hawk

RR, so sorry to hear that. We have a tenacious hawk that knows exactly the best place to hide before he tries to get one of our martins. I’ve only seen him get one but I’m sure he has others. It’s a horrible thing to watch, I know. You feel so helpless because there is nothing you can do other than ...

Rrmartins, we have some new ones as well. I watched them out feeding then they all came in. Right now it’s raining 😟.

Re: Hand Warmers

Doug, I understand about flipping crickets or whatever food you use as we have done that in the past. But what about when they are staying in their gourds or housing because of below freezing temps Will they come out on their own or do you flush them out first?

Re: Hand Warmers

I know you’re relieved they returned. We found a female on the ground alive but starving yesterday morning. We fed her and she readily took the food but couldn’t fly. She is with a rehabber now.

Re: Central Texas

(Not sure what happened but going at it again.) Volkmerk. Good for you. We didn’t get any birds our first year. Our second year we had one pair with six babies. Then a terrible thing happened when a rat snake managed to bypass our baffle and ate mom and all the babies. Dad wasn’t there. I found the ...

Re: Central Texas

Our first martin showed up February 2 and on February 3 we had a pair. We have had steady arrivals since then.
We have had a successful colony for several years now and that is the reason ours return so early. Have you had martins previously or are you just starting out?

Re: Hand Warmers

Paule, thank you for the encouragement. We have been landlords for about fifteen years now and in all those years never had temps so cold for so long. One night, yes, but then it warms up again. After all this is South Central Texas . So this was basically a new experience. We managed to help ...

Re: Hand Warmers

After three nights of temperatures in the 20’s with wind chill, we lost four martins. Hubby put hand warmers and dried meal worms in each afternoon or we probably would have lost more. This morning he noticed a lot of bedding that had accumulated in the entrance of one and fearing it might be blocke...

Re: Hand Warmers

rrmartins, My Hubby is going to put our hand warmers in about 3:00. We have several martins already staying in their gourds and new ones looking for a place to hole up this afternoon. It’s been funny to watch the newbies when they go into a gourd that already has someone in it. I watch waiting for t...
