Duh, thank you Tony :-). I didn't even think to check out the scout report. I was actually thinking of someone else here that rarely posted last year. He has a neighbor who has had an active colony for a few years and I know he got several martins last year, his first. I don't remember his name or t...

Matin Dave, I don't have permanent type plugs for the horizontals. We had them taped shut during the off season. Then we cleaned them up and got them ready for the new season and cut some of the swimming pool "noodles" to plug up the entrances temporarily. So far they have worked really well and wil...

Elmer,
This should be a test as to where your priorities lie - that new grandbaby or the martins :-). Seriously, congratulations on all three events. You're right, it can't get much better. A good marriage, grandchildren and martins. Life is good.

Thanks for your replies. I drove around this area yesterday and didn't spot any. I thought I saw two at a site just down the road but upon closer inspection they were starlings. Rain predicted for this afternoon and tomorrow (Sat.) so that may slow them down even more. Otherwise I'll be out there ge...

A.P., I was hoping the martins would forget all about that little ole 6' snake :-). You're probably right about starting over. However, I have't seen any on the lake behind our property and they are almost always out there even if none are at my house. I looked at last year's journal and the first d...

Georgetown, TX - have you seen any Martins?

There have been reports all around here, but I have yet to see a martin near my site in GT. Any other landlords out there in GT see one yet?

Last year I purchased some horizontal gourds on the recommendation of a friend who has been in martins a while. It was my second year (none stayed the first) and the one family of martins that came claimed the Troyer immediately. We installed the WDC entrances that can be ordered (extra of course) a...

Steve, Thanks for updating this subject. We finally found some 1/2" netting TODAY and it was just a few miles down the road from us! We went to a farm supply store and it was listed as deer netting. $19.95 for enough to probably last our lifetime :-). The 3/4" was easily found at Home Depot. Guess w...

Chuck,
Thanks for the advise. We did find our 3/4" at Home Depot but they didn't have the 1/2". We do have a farm supply near and I hadn't even thought of that. We'll give it a try and then a garden supply if they don't have it! And another Saturday spent driving miles for the birds :-).

1/2" Bird Netting For Snake Trap - where to find?

We have easily found the 3/4" bird netting for our snake trap (it is available at most garden centers) but can only find 1/2" on the Internet and it is VERY costly. If anyone knows where I can purchase it at a reasonable price, please send me a PM. Thanks, Sharon

Angela, Can't believe you're not ready yet :-). Did you say you are having sparrow problems? More than usual? We haven't seen many YET. I'm sure once the martins start showing up the bad birds will too. Hopefully tomorrow will be a nice day to work on martin housing. I'm glad for this rain, but it s...

We often see Kestrals up our way too Sheryl. And as Louise mentioned, occasionally they use the perch on the top of our martin house. I was worried about that last year but they did seem to disappear about the time the martins started showing up. They are very pretty birds and are welcome to as many...

Thank you John. Just want something that will work! I don't want to experience what we did last year. It is just too sad to lose those babies like that. I appreciate your help too.

Thank you so much Steve. I will go to the link right now and print out the info. We're on our way to somewhere this afternoon to get netting :-). Where depends on who has it! I'll e-mail you if I have any questions.

Netting to Deter Snakes - How to?

I know this has been addressed several times before, but naturally when you are ready to do something, you can't find the instructions on how to do it! Since losing 7 babies last year (my first year to have martins) to a huge rat snake, I want to put some netting ABOVE the baffle. Since we have to r...

Happy New Year with Lots of Martins!

Hi everyone, Just got back on the forum after our albeit short winter. But with the weather the way it has been everywhere, it is hard telling what can happen between now and Spring. You all scared me with this talk of early birds so hubby and I spent today taking down our houses and gourds and clea...

Hi John, Welcome to the forum. You have made a wise choice in picking out the gourd system. Sometimes the martins will go to gourds when they won't go to regular housing. I live just north of Austin and we have a lot of martins here too. I didn't get any my first year, but had a lot of interest. We ...

Dora, We have had the quad pod system (8 pods) for two years now. The first year we didn't attract any nesting martins (although there were a LOT of looky loos) and the second year we moved it closer to our house and added horizontal gourds. A very territorial ASY male who attracted a beautiful SY f...

Thank you for your replies Laverne and Holly. I have to agree with you both :-). Either they are on their way there to Highland or out flying around once they get there. Hows that for sitting on the fence (LOL). Whichever the case, it has been quite a sight to behold.
