Dr. Kathi, I hear you. Whatever endeavor we have started, we have always researched it thoroughly, bought all the books, did all the recommended precautions, etc., etc. and we would end up with next to nothing results. All this while another person did the minimal amount of work, didn't care if it w...

Lanell, What great news! I was thinking about you earlier today and wondering how it was going. What about at home? Did the visiting birds stay? I am so happy for you. You deserve this after all the hard work, patience and yes, probably even tears shed, during the disappointments. Congratulations. S...

Fred,
Was there a picture that was supposed to go with your post? If so, it didn't come through.

Sue, You have my sympathies after having lost all the eggs from two barn swallow nests and one wren nest here last week. I didn't know how much I hated them until that happened. It sounds like yours are hanging around a lot longer than ours did though. After we got about four males, we haven't seen ...

Good News! I managed to get one sparrow yesterday and another today while they were raiding the barn swallow nest on our back porch. I have a good vantage point by opening our back door a crack and shooting from there. It is a new place to shoot from and neither sparrow was expecting it. I think I g...

Flylow,
If he was really interested in your site, he will be back. Or he could have just been curious. I've had lots of "looky lous" at my site, even when it has been open, but they've gone on to other places. They do come to check it out just out of curiosity I believe.

Glen, I hear you. You're sure right about missing them the first time. And that is one of the problems I am having right now! I think another barn swallow couple have abandoned their nest :-(. She had eggs and rarely left the nest. Neither of them are in it today. I don't see any eggs on the ground ...

Mary,
I have looked on the PMCA shop for the SG insert traps you mention and cannot find them. Can you direct me to where they are? Maybe I'm seeing them but not if you know what I mean :-).
Thanks for your help.

John and everyone, Thank you for the replies. Just to let you know where we are in the process: Hubby is on the bandwagon this weekend since he saw the devastation the sparrows made. We DO shoot and trap, shooting being the method of choice. The problem began a few days ago when I missed while tryin...

Killer Sparrows on Rampage Today

It was a bad day. The sparrows are everywhere. From one of the barn swallow nests, eggs have been appearing broken on the patio. I thought maybe it was a youngster born last year that was doing the damage but never saw one. Today I first heard and then saw a sparrow in the barn swallow nest. I check...

Lou, I have the Quad pod system with four HZ gourds hanging below. This is what I just now did. One HZ has an SY pair in it. That is the ONLY pair I have right now. Nothing is in the quad pods. The sparrows keep going from one HZ to another after I clean out a nest. I, of course, left the HZ the mar...

S & S Controller Question

I'm having a heck of a time with sparrows this year. They are really sneaky. I've been able to eliminate some, but now I have some building on the back side of the house and after missing them a couple of times, they are on to me. My nest box trap is not catching them. I have been thinking about get...

Lanell, The ASY that I had last season (and think I have again this season) was very late showing up. I just checked my notes and he arrived on April 24 last year. So YES they can show up this late and later. Don't know if he lost his housing last year or what so it could happen to you. Actually, he...

Bud,
Your Cardinal family is adorable. Please take pics of them as they mature and post them so we can see the changes. I love Cardinals too but have never found one of their nests. Do you know how old they are when they fledge?

Pedro, It is exciting isn't it! I'm really happy for you. I'm sure this is the start of building a nice colony. There is still a lot of time to attract more martins and the best advertisement is your first pair. I'm basically at the same place you are but this is my third year. First year nothing, s...
