Re: Bird netting

Do you see any possibility the plastic would deter them?

Bird netting

Is it legal to kill snakes entangled in bird netting? I am going to try taping or tying clear plastic over a baffle, let in hang all around like a "skirt", and place a second baffle over the first to help secure the plastic and provide hard to climb surface. Looking for a non-lethal solution.

snakes

Here is something I am going to try this year to try and frustrate snake attacks. Place a squirrel baffle about 4 feet up the pole. Then tie or tape a layer of clear plastic with a "skirt" of plastic hanging down all around. Then place a second baffle over the first one to help secure the plastic an...

Martins travel far for food. The insects they are finding may have been exposed to insecticides. May not be dehydration primarily.
One advantage of having many Martin landlords is we, as a group, may detect subtle changes in the environment before it is generally known.

2 or 3 fledged today, even with this devastaing heat wave. I hope there is not a repeat of 3 seasons ago A group came back to roost the first evening after they were fledged. Due to the heat they just lay on the porch of the house I had at that time. Apparently the parents could not keep them hydrat...

I will have to reevaluate. Heath gourds have been great for me because they are light, easier to raise and lower. I have had great results in non-hot years. I have managed to have zero problems with sparrows and starlings. Only occasional unexplained loss. Maybe I could handle 8 super gourds instead...

Vented, white gourds. The young were very healthy until the heat arrived. Keeping them cooler would definitely help, but there would still be a problem with dehydration. I hope the forum monitor will correct me if I am wrong, but I think the nestlings can only be hydrated by the insects they are fed...

Several days around 100. Very little breeze. Most of the bugs are under leaves to escape the heat. The martins can feed early in the mornings and evening. That is not enough to keep the young hydrated. The older ones will jump. They seem to manage well under 95 degrees, even with the humidity.

Rehabilating wild birds and the law.

Can anyone speak to this issue as it relates to martins?

Thanks for your comments and efforts. I take heart in that I have eight pairs and I am hoping that, between the early fledglings and the ones left in their nests after the jumpers, I may have replacement numbers, ie, sixteen young.

I gave up trying to get them back in the gourds. I never np know where they came from. Also if I feed one, he dies anyway because I can't teach it how to feed.

Are there good flyways to and from the site? A male that is ready to mate will definitely enter a gourd or compartment and try hard to get the female to enter. If she likes the site, she may still delay entering the hole . She will come back with him several times until she is ready to settle in. If...

The Eastern King bird is a fly catcher. It sits on an object and make s short flights to catch an insect it sees. It does not want insect eating martins in its territory.

I think I am correct in saying that the only way the young can stay hydrated is from the moisture in the insects they are fed. Dehydration is what kills them, a circulation problem, like shock in humans.

Oppressive Heat

The adults are hanging around the site, saving energy, like in cold wet weather. Both conditions limit food supply. Soon I will start seeing young ones on the lawn. Totally dehydrated, hopeless. In past years I have lost newly fledged birds, that came back to roost, but could not be fed and became t...

Can't speak to the SREH issue. As to your martin issue, the male finds the site, the female decides if they will nest. It took me ten years to get my first pair. If they had bonded before they arrived, the male left with the female. If not bonded, the male stayed. The first few years, I saw males lo...

Birds can alternate sides of brain that sleep

I wonder if what I read is true. That birds can have one side of their brains sleep while the other side is awake and on watch. That they can alternately rest sides of the brain while making long migratory trips, enabling them to fly longer trips. Also, when they are roosting, totally asleep, the te...
