Re: Wing Entrapment Survey from PMCA

I need some feedback by someone who has some knowledge about the anatomy of adult martins. I am considering placing two slots on a SREH. I want them to be a pair of crescent slots (WESS, wing entrapment safety slots) designed to recapture some the loss space of the safer round hole. Hopefully, these...

Re: Martins Not Taking to New Bird House

Very creative. Generally I thinks martins like a little open area around the base of the pole. Also the house may be too close to your work area. Is there a building near by? Are there good flyways where they can fly down near the ground and then up?

Re: Wing entrapment idea.

Maybe carve out a little crescent at the place on each side where the round hole would be. Kinda recapturing the safety of the round entrance. I hope some researches this.

Wing entrapment idea.

I am wondering that if there was a rounded notch at the top of the entrance, modifying the SREH entrances, so that a struggling martin could slip the trapped elbow through, yet not make entrance easier for starlings. Maybe one at each corner.

Re: BO-9 TO BO-11 GOURDS

I read that wearing a black golf shirt in hot weather was cooler than wearing a white shirt. The black does absorb heat from sun, but it also absorbs heat from the body. A flip of the shirt whisks away the heat. I tried it while playing golf and I really think I was cooler. So I used black shirts al...

Re: Starlings get through factory crescent

The following is based on a one year experience out of forty years having martins, an overgeneralization I admit. I bought large gourds with the crescent entrances that year. The Starlings loved them. I got rid of the gourds because of that. Also for the first time I had trouble with a pair of Cresc...

Re: Can hawks make purple martins shun a house they used for years?

Had Martin paradise for 40 years. Very noisy, young hanging out the gourds. Last year, hawk attack. Suddenly I could barely tell I had martins. They would slip in quitely to feed. No visitors. They communicated to the young to stay hidden and very quite. Very intelegent!! This year, zero martin sigh...

Humane snake glue traps

Has any one used these snake traps around a Martin system? Snake crawls in, gets stuck. To release them just pour vegetable oil on the glue to dissolve it.

Re: Decoys

Placing decoys on the system is not an option now. Cool weather and females incubating. Has any one tried placing decoys on a Sheppard s hook?

Could decoys actually attract hawks? Do more harm than good?

One more point. Recent report states that a birds cognitive ability is greater than a small primate. So bird brain is no longer an insult.

I am surprised they don't remember you and fly at you. Look up story how they can recognize people that have bothered their nest in the past.

Re: Mockingbird nest on Martin gourd pole.. Is this a problem?

A guy told me he had a fear of mocking birds. They sense this and chase him every time he goes into the yard. Like a rooster that always chased my wife and no body else.

Re: Entrance facing pole.

I tried one last year and it was occupied. They had to maneuver a little more, but handled it nicely. There were five more unused ones the pair could have chosen.

Entrance facing pole.

I experimented with three out of eleven gourds facing the pole. All three are occupied. I think they are a little safer and I think they feel safer. Four pair chose outside entrances.
