Re: Season Two of the PMCA's Nest Cam is now live!

we originally had only the outer porches mounted. but, the adults were having a lot of trouble exiting the gourds...a lot of jumping and failing. it was excruciating to watch with the adults jumping all over the eggs and pinkies. it definitely gave us an appreciation on how difficult the startling r...

Re: Season Two of the PMCA's Nest Cam is now live!

Great stream Joe! Exponentially better than mine (Mine has about the same video quality as the live video feeds from the moon landings in the late 1960s and early 1970s.... ) Are you able to mention what kind of camera you're using, and possibly show how you have it mounted? Its a Reolink RLC...

Re: Season Two of the PMCA's Nest Cam is now live!

Seem to have finally got the audio up and running. The new camera is impressively better than the old one. Definitely a blessing in disguise that it burned out on Monday.

We need to post a warning that the PMCA Nestcam reduces any work that you hoped to get done in the day....very addictive.

How to Save Starving Purple Martins

With cold rain and even snow in many parts of the breeding range, keep in mind there's a way to help your martins make it through.

Tim Shaheen's wonderful video below teaches you how to save Purple Martins from starvation.

Re: Is anyone in the midwest on schedule as far as migration goes?

I wander if anyone with the PMCA has any input. I am assuming if there was some major kill off last fall or in Brazil someone would have known about it. We haven't had any reports of major die-offs anywhere in the summer or winter range. Reports from farther south in the range suggest that the migr...

Re: Scout arrival

Last evening a scout landed on house. For some reason I was not able to report this because the report page would not let me log in. Call the PMCA tomorrow during business hours and we can take care of your login issues for you. 814-833-7656 ask for Tara or Joe. Thanks for participating in our citi...

Re: Scout Reporting Question (for Admin)

The procedure is the same this year. The issue last year seemed to center around the website's system for sending password reset messages. We have redesigned the system and it is working consistently now. Of course, if anyone still has difficulty with the process, we encourage them to give us a call...

Re: Do we know if Rooney the runt fledged???

The runt did manage to fledge but was not banded. We hope for the best, but the odds are not in his favor for a return next year. You do what you can, when you can. That's all that we can do. Good luck to all of our fledglings out there. We'll see you in a few months!

Re: PMCA Live NestCam

Everyone took their first flights on Saturday afternoon. They have been returning at night to sleep at home, but that will end soon as well. We'll definitely be on the look out for these (now famous) martins in the future. Thank you to everyone who watched and shared the nestcam feed. It has greatly...

Re: PMCA Live NestCam

Our babies are ready to leave the nest! Tomorrow they will be 26 days old and will be developed enough to leave the nest when they are ready. They may return to sleep in the gourd at night so we will keep the camera on to check in on them. But, in just a few weeks they will depart to Brazil for the ...

Re: PMCA Live NestCam

Yesterday was a very big day for (now famous) birds. All three nestlings continue to thrive and had their legs banded so we can track them when they return from the Amazon next spring. You might also notice that the nest looks different. Yesterday the nest was routinely replaced with new material to...

Re: PMCA Live NestCam

Okie, that is indeed the ear. It's pretty strange to see them without their feathers on. For the eagle eyed out there, you may have noticed that one of the nestlings had an ant head stuck on its beak. Ants can clamp down and pierce the skin around the beak with the head remaining after the body has ...

Re: PMCA Live NestCam

Despite supplemental feeding, the runt was continuing to fall behind in development to its siblings and was being roughed around by their larger size. It has been removed and moved to a local rehabilitator for more focused care. We will post updates with its progress.

Re: PMCA Live NestCam

We are closely monitoring the health of the runt. It is not uncommon to find one of the nestlings behind its nestmates in development (even though all of the eggs hatched within 12 hrs of each other). We're hopeful that it will survive, but nestling mortality does occur and is one of the reasons tha...

Re: PMCA Live NestCam

We're keeping an eye on the runt to make sure he' stays strong. The siblings don't seem to be dominating him just yet. It takes about a week for the young to be able to thermoregulate on their own. I'd imagine that we'll see more feeding trips and less brooding very soon. Plans are to band the young...

Re: PMCA Live NestCam

Has anyone else noticed that the parents seem to be having trouble exiting. I've noticed this is happening often. They need half of a porch or anything to help make it easier to get out of the cresent entrance. Glynn The male seems to be getting the hang of it since we added a 1/2 length inner porc...

Re: PMCA Live NestCam

He hasn't slept with her since she began incubating. It's been interesting to see how his level of mate guarding has varied throughout the nesting cycle. He may be sleeping in another gourd as there are several empty ones on this new gourd rack.
