Re: Picture of new 20 cavity house

Crescent holes help prevent Starlings from getting in. The entrance hole style will do nothing for other predators such as Owls or snakes. You need predator guard for each specific predator really. Owl guard wires out in front of the entrances to prevent the owls from landing on the porches (but owl...

Re: Sparrows in my house! Help!

Exactly DebA, nest pulling doesn't help in the long run. You need to remove them from your site entirely...(by humane euthanasia). I find once you have the bait bird that the repeating ground trap (DRST) works wonders and is very low maintenance/work. Just be sure to check it at least twice a day (I...

Re: Sparrows in my house! Help!

Sialis has a good page with a review of traps available: http://www.sialis.org/traps.htm My favorite is #1 Deluxe Repeating Sparrow Trap (DRST) or sometimes called Uncle Blaines trap. Always keep one "Bait bird" in it (I prefer a female) and place it near the feeding area and you will catch many fas...

Re: Same old quandary....HOSP :(

If health or mobility is preventing control would a repeating ground trap be manageable for you? You can place it on a patio table so it is at a level (and location) that is easy to access. You can place it quite a distance from the housing and put some feathers and cheep food in and that will draw ...

Re: Let's talk!

Was really enjoying this thread until the disturbing post and just have to say: use proper predator guards!! There is absolutely NO need to kill snakes. Many snakes are already threatened or endangered because of humans unnecessary killing for no reason and to no benefit. Its really disturbing to se...

Those eggs look awfully dark to me. Maybe its just the way the photo was taken and is shadows. Hard to know ID from this.

Maybe consider other species too: Flycatcher http://www.sialis.org/nestsgcfl.htm (lots of others to brows through there on sialis)

The stuff sold at tractor supply is crushed coral LABELLED as oyster shell. (do a search of the forum to find posts on this by others) May work just fine but I have issues with the blatant lie or the label. The stuff sold in the PMA store is it actual Oyster shell or is it the same crushed coral or ...

Andrew: I just wanted to post an update. I have found a active (long term) colony just to the west of Milton so there is hope! They said they receive arrivals of migrants and new nests starting until mid-June. Have you had any action at your site yet?

Hey Andrew, Long time lurker here that just had to register to respond to you. Great to see someone from the area on here! I think you are just in time for the returning martins in our area, they are only just showing up at the lakefront and at Mountsberg the last week or two so your timing is good....
