I use Diatomaceous Earth. Have used it for 10 years. It is totally non-toxic to beast or fowl. But it kills lice and mites or anything with an exoskeleton. I mix up a slurry and smear it on the walls inside the cavities. It will erode off the walls slowly during the season. In 2003 I noticed all the...

Comparing migration map to those of previous years

Looking at the density of dots on the 1st arrival maps of previous full years I would venture that maybe only 1/3 to 1/2 of the PM 1st arrivals have yet been reported this year. Is that because people aren't reporting or that, on average, the migration is late this year? If the latter is the case th...

Migration Video?

It occurred to me that a migration video would be feasible if the scouting report data included zip code. There is a zip-code/Lat-Lon file on the Internet. Make one JPG file for each day with each JPG showing the cumulative locations of the arrivals up to the last day superimposed on a map of the US...

I was afraid I had missed this year. Have had Martins for over 20 years. This has been an unusual year for them...

Re: Are egg shells really necessary?

Being raised on a farm I know that chickens will lay soft shell eggs If they don't get enough calcium. I imagine the same thing would hold true for any bird. For chickens, mom always bought grit made from oyster shells. As well as providing calcium the oyster grit would enable the chickens to grind ...

Late this year

My first didn't show up until Mar 19. That's over a month later then average. We had an ice storm here couple of weeks ago. That probably kept the insects from coming out. Had some late cold spells that probably delayed things. I've had 2 boxes for the last 20 years and the average date of 1st arriv...
