The two sites by the WalMart in Bastrop were pretty busy when I drove by there on Thursday. Yeah, When I was there on Friday the South rack was buzzing with PMs. :) But, the only birds I saw on the North rack was starlings. :x It's a shame, the first scouts I saw were on the north rack. What is rea...

Thanks Chickadee, that's a good one about the insects! (I would rather eat them Myself, than have sparrows!) Hey! Next , we need Deb.A or MamaBruff to come up with a " Purple Martin killing, Flying Cow" song! We could start it off with Willie Nelson Mammas Don't Let Your Babies Grow Up to Sav...

I think that is good that all of you provide owl and hawk guards to protect your PMs. Controlling vegetation can also help to eliminate hiding spaces where the PMs can easy be ambushed. You don't want your PMs to be "easy picken's" for any predator that flies by. Just remember, nature is what it is ...

Re: s&s

I could see you all butchering chickens on the farm, had to chuckle i was thinking of ways you would kill the chickens and cows and hogs, lol. I think it has a lot to do with, if it was something you grow up with. I was sort of a suburban kid, so I missed all of that. I knew where meat comes from, ...

Humm, I know rehabers mean well, but not animals should be saved. I'm just glad that you did not see a starling being hand feed like the starling I saw in Corpus Christ in 2003. I still can't get over it.

I don't think anybody who is a nature lover EVER gets to the point of euthanizing S&S "without feelings", ever. I suppose my longer journey made it not quite as hard to control S&S, because, I started with injured birds that would have died anyway. Although that was not easy either. See my Tipping ...

From what I've seen ether makes a creature groggy and tired until they pass-out. I would imagine it to be simulate to getting drunk to the point that you would pass-out. I really don't see this as an inhuman death. The way I see it, if they are unconscious, then the time they take to actually die is...

Well, I tried running the calculation, but it seems that no one seems to care haw many calories a martin eats per day. But they do care about how much a humming bird eats per day. A 6G Ruby-throated humming bird eats about 10Kcal per day. The Marten weighs 55G that is 9 times heaver. But he is not a...

Yeah, wing entrapment is serious! There are two gourd racks in the Bastrop Walmart parking lot for purple martins. The South Rack is all Crescent Doors. Yesterday, on the south rack in the door was a dead martin with one wing caught in the "corner" of the crescent. The North rack is 50/50 circles an...

A light bulb will heat the house, but I really can't guess how warm/hot a 7W bulb will heat the house. The factors are, what is the temp outside the house, how well insulated is the house, and how fast the wind is blowing? There is no thermostat, so the house temp will rise until it is warm enough t...

That is better, The first time I almost interpreted it is you were driving down the road trying to hit robins and doves on purpose.

I once accidentally hit/killed a sparrow with my car. The sad part was that it was a native sparrow.

I'm putting together a primer for building an electric predator pole guard EPPG using an electric fence charger. It may take me a few days to finish it, I'm a slow writer. I need to write the primer so that I can talk in a language that can be understood. I don't want to use terms that people here d...

Its common name is somewhat misleading kind-a sort-a misleading, because you rarely ever see the actual red belly marking, the marking is so small. The identification is made from markings on the head. I did find a dead one . and I was able to see the red belly marking. It is some sort of narr...

Well, I guess I'll tell my story. There was no single event but a series of events stretched out over almost 25 years. I've been birding through out the 90's and quite active many yeas. Well, I'm not really sure is I would recommend this joke for a talk. It's a bit risqué (PG-13) and the joke hinges on a basic knowledge of bird anatomy. In addition, it is a horrible pun. However I rarely get to use this joke in a forum where people even get the reference. So here it goes. If you fe...
