Re: V Trap - The mother of all traps!

Yep, Peter, I'm on-board with the "it needs to be done" (concerning starlings and english sparrows)…..just wasn't sure how you managed such a bunch of birds.

Thanks for the note/continued good luck trapping, and best wishes on a bunch of PM's for 2016.

Re: V Trap - The mother of all traps!

Great job, Peter. Been thinking about building one of these jewels. Quick question: what do you do with the birds you've trapped (how do you get 'em out?).

Keep up the great work!

Keep us posted on how your season goes, Rodger. Hope 2016 is a banner year at your colony.

Re: I have a Martin

It is so exciting, looking out at snow and a temp of 8 degrees, to hear of the return of the PM's to Florida.

Keep those "cards and letters" coming, folks….makes the winter seem shorter

Happy New Year, all.

Re: Spotting Scope

Hey Rodger…pretty sure Emil is spot-on about the drone causing problems with your colony. I'd still vote for a quality pair of binoculars. However, if a spotting scope is your "weapon of choice", there are some available with dual eye pieces. Having peered through spotting scopes for long periods at...

Re: Martin Season is Near

Question ("aimed" at Steve K, but anyone feel free to chime in). We have the supplied DL winch with our Gemini Rack. Had one small issue a year-or-two ago, but otherwise has worked OK. Did you convert your Gemini racks over to the Fulton winch, and--if so--would you share the model # you used? Hope ...

Re: Martin Season is Near

You can't even imagine how exciting it is to those of us living much further north when the chatter starts of the first PM's arriving. It'll be many LONG months before we expect arrivals, but we live vicariously through our fellow landlords "down south". Seems "the buzz" is now about the Fulton winc...

Another beauty! Can't wait to see photos next spring of all the returning PM's.

Hope you and your family have a very Merry Christmas.

Re: fledged sixteen I think??

Was hopefully the start of something to grow from at our place, as well. After some frustrating near-misses, rookie mistakes, etc., we had two pair each produce 6 eggs, all hatched/fledged.

Now, if they return this coming spring with friends......

Hope everyone has a wonderful Thanksgiving.

But, Steve, you never did mention what you're going to do in your spare time  . The projects you mentioned should keep you plenty busy….nice work.

Hope you and your family have a safe & happy holiday season.

Re: Spotting Scope

Hey Roger….sure you've already considered it, but don't overlook a good, quality pair of binoculars. My wife and I shot archery professionally for 29 years; we used a spotting scope for some applications, but NEVER left home without our binos. We used Leica 10x42's for years, and they are superb. Wh...

Re: Three years and still no gourd big enough!

Being "way up north", we have to contend with a pretty short growing season. Tried bottle gourds this year, and had some I thought were going to be big enough (thought being the key word). Has anyone ever located a good source for large bottle gourds for purchase. It seems all the growers I see adve...

Good reminder. Needles are nice and dry...I'll gather a big garbage bag full.

Don't want to wish a single precious day away, but, man, I can't wait for the return of the wonderful martins.

Happy Holidays!

Hey Bob--- I built a cedar T-14 off of the plans Chuck Abare has on his site "Chuck's Purple Martin page". If you've ever read any of Chuck's material, he's extremely knowledable, and seems to enjoy helping others to learn about PM's. The house projects wasn't particularly difficult, and utilized a ...

Thanks, Ed, for the note. Yep, I'm sure out of the elements for half the year makes 'em last longer…..it's just that storage issue. Last year, all the Troyers were under the ping-pong table in the basement. Made looking for those smash-shots from my wife harder to find  . Thanks, again, for t...

leaving gourds up?

OK, at the risk of sounding lazy (I'm not), do any of your leave your Troyer-type synthetic gourds out in the elements all winter? Would seem for those of us short on storage space, the winter weather wouldn't be much harder on 'em than the summer sun.

Thoughts??

Michelle and I sat out a few moments ago around the fire-pit, and were treated to 10-12 martins flying around, making all kinds of glorious racket, and finally settling-in to the gourds on the Gemini rack. Finally had a couple of pair of nesting martings, each hatched/fledged 6. For a few glorious d...
