I'm voting for the Brazil trip….currently -17 in western WI, with a lovely breeze. I might have miscalculated, but I came up with a wind-chill temp of 4,100 degrees below zero. (OK, I didn't really calculate---that was just my estimate, based on how my hands and feet felt after plowing our driveway ...

We are located in far western WI…after a low last night of 19 below zero, our "high" today is forecast to be a whopping -2. Some Anchorage residents will likely run around in shorts today (their forecast high is 44), and their neighbors to the north, Fairbanks, will top-out at 29 degrees. What the h...

Oh, I SO long to hear the wonderful sounds of returning martins, and SO hope that one day our yet-lived-in new Gemini rack looks anywhere near as close to wonderful as this.

We are in western WI, where it's currently zero out, and the snow is about knee deep.

Thanks for sharing.

Thanks, Steve, for the info. Look forward to hearing of your martins returning. (We're still a little way off from any scout arrival; currently -7, and have snow piled VERY high).

Ray….hard to believe, as I look out at the snow piled high, but we do have those 90+ degree days (sometimes many). I have vent plugs for the elbows, so in the event they aren't needed, they'll stay plugged. Still trying to decide the most aesthetically-pleasing means for venting the vertical gourds....

I put twin vents in all the horizontal Troyers; air-flow looks to be greatly improved. Haven't decided the best means for venting the vertical round gourd yet.

Thanks for the advice/encouragement.

Steve….great photo, beautiful set-up. I have to tell you (if I haven't already), I think you posted this photo (or one similar) a little while back. I had just done a search, in anticipation of putting up a "proper" martin offering. My search was something along at the lines of "your favorite martin...

Posts like your's bring a broad smile to those of us choosing to live a "bit further" north. We have about 30" of snow on the ground, it's a balmy 18 degrees and a lovely breeze is keeping the air fresh . Please keep posting "good martin news", and throw a photo-or-two in for us dreaming of the retu...

Thanks, Debbie & Emil, for the note. Will be heading to ACE Hardware in the a.m..

The return of martins to the frozen tundra of western WI is still several months off, so I have a little time.

Vent plugs from Troyer

Possibly they are new, or maybe I've been (again) caught sleeping at the wheel. Anyone have any experience with the vent plugs Troyers offers??? I haven't yet been bold enough to take a drill to our Troyer gourds. Suppose now is the time, and still weighing the best options for venting, while keepin...

Hey Tom…we live in far western WI (about 20 minutes north of Hudson, WI); the only thing I located on-line is listed as the "Eastern WI PM Association. Is there a specific site I should be visiting for more information/to sign-up? I'm a "newbie", compared to most, in my attempts to become a successf...

Thanks, guys, for the good info. Have a new Gemini gourd rack I just installed, getting ready for next spring. With the info you provided (and possibly a little assistance from the local Radio Shack) I'll hopefully be fully prepared for next springs arrival.

Thanks, again.

Dawn Song

Being a "newbie" to the site, I apologize if I'm duplicating a message from earlier, or missing something already covered/posted. Trying to spend the winter devising a method for playing the dawn song and other martin vocalizations next spring. Has this already been covered on the forum, and--if so-...

winterizing the Gemini

I know the season is long over, but just recently purchased a Gemini gourd rack. Once the boxes arrived, I knew I wouldn't be able to wait till spring, so this beautifully designed rack and 24 Troyer gourds now adorn our backyard. As far as winterizing, any lube/spray used to protect the pole/suppor...

Mentoring

I'm new to the site....sorry if this has been addressed previously. I've discovered late-in-life I'm supposed to be a purple-martin landlord  . We live in western WI (near Hudson, WI, and about an hour east of St. Paul, MN). Anyone know of a mentoring group/purple martin local chapter in my ar...
