Trio-Wade TW-12 House Modified to 6 Expanded Compartments

That Trio-Wade house looks great in your backyard.
Between the gourd rack and the Trio house, you have a good selection of housing for the purple martins.
A purple martin was sighted in Yantis, TX yesterday, 1/25/2020!

Will BBs work on Non-Native, Invasive Birds?

T-Bird, Conrad Baker presents the best way to determine if BBs are accurate enough at 20 yds with your Benjamin 310 BB air rifle. His test to compare BBs vs. Pellets is concise and to the point. The results would be very useful to many landlords. There are many landlords who start with a BB gun to s...

Copper coated lead BBs vs. Steel BBs

If you shot a BB gun of any variety as a youngster, you were taught or learned not to shoot steel BBs at a hard target such as a tin can (thin steel coated with tin). The steel BB can ricochet back at you if you hit it just right and stand too close to the target. A soft target like a modern thin al...

BBs vs Pellets in Air Rifle

T-Bird, You can shoot pellets in a smoothbore air rifle, but I am not sure that any benefit will occur. Without the rifling to spin the pellet I don't think the pellet will travel any truer than a lead or steel BB. Do NOT shoot steel BBs in a rifled .177 barrel. The steel BB will erode the rifling i...

Benjamin 340 BB

T-Bird, You are the proud owner of your Dad's Benjamin Franklin Model 310 .177 cal., 4.5 mm BB smooth bore multi-pump single shot bolt action air rifle. Looks like your Dad took care of it. It does not look molested from any previous repairs. Lots of potential. On the rear cap of the larger compress...

Carolina Wrens

The male Carolina wren starts to build a nest in multiple locations. When he attracts a female, he will take her around to all of his minimally started nests. She will inspect them and then chose one of them as her nest. She will complete the nest and then lay her eggs. Each year a pair raise one - ...

Vintage Benjamin Air Rifle

T-Bird, You cannot tell us that you have possession of a vintage Benjamin air rifle and leave us hanging!! What vintage, caliber, and model? A picture would precipitate a lot of useful discussion. You might have the perfect air rifle for your needs in your possession. .177", .22", or BB? Does it wor...

Re: Pellet guns...What do you own or recommend?

I've been using older pellet guns such as the Sheridan pump blue streak .20 cal open sights that I haven no idea how old it is. It's lite and shoots a 14.3 gr pellet at around 650fps, its a great gun! GFB, I purchased a 1972 Sheridan "Blue Streak" air rifle since T-Bird started this topic. I will n...

Scopes for Air Rifles

Purchase a scope designed for "air rifles". Hawke scopes are extremely durable, reasonably priced, and work really well.
Conrad,
I could not agree more with your selection of scopes for air rifles. I admire and respect Hawke scopes for air rifles.
What is your opinion of UTG/Leapers scopes?

Beeman 1040 - Spanish vs. Shanghai production

jogl, If your Beeman 1040 air rifle was an earlier model produced in Spain, then quality control was good and your 1040 would be qualified as a good, inexpensive air rifle. If your Beeman 1040 was produced after 2010 in the current Shanghai plant, then quality control may not as stringent and there ...

New Housing at Existing Colony

I have been lucky but everything has always been stacked in my favor. I grew up in Texas where the highest concentration of purple martins nest in North America. I now live in a suburb of Memphis, TN next to the Mississippi River and one of the largest flyways for bird migration in North America. If...

Air Rifles

flyin-lowe, I agree that many Benjamin models are appropriate for the situations we meet in a purple martin colony. When Benjamin Air Rifle Company acquired the Sheridan Company in 1977, they changed the 342/347 to incorporate many superior design features of the Sheridan "Blue Streak"/"Silver Strea...

.22 Short rifle

45 years experience with .22 Long Rifle. No experience with .22 CB and only minimal experience with .22 Short. Of course, the .22 Short can be shot in a rifle chambered for .22 LR but accuracy will be reduced. I have never had a specific rifle chambered for .22 Short. I forgot about .22 CB Short. Yo...

Pellet guns...What do you own or recommend?

Short answer centers around the equation - E = m x c squared. (Sorry I do not have time this morning to learn how to denote power of two on a computer). Long answers involve what kind of prey do you expect to hit (HOSP vs. EUS), how much damage do you want to incur to your Trendsetter 12 if you miss...

Quality air rifle

$150 air rifle will have a hard time with accuracy. A Benjamin 397S .177 variable pump air rifle from PyramydAir will currently be $199 for the rifle with iron sights and $269 for the rifle with mounted scope. A sparrow won't be very lucky at 30 yds. with that rifle and pellets that group well with ...

Benjamin 397 - Modern version of Benjamin 317?

Bird Brain, The Benjamin 397 reminds me of a modern, upgraded version of a Benjamin 317. My Father had a 317 which was my scoped sparrow sniper rifle as a young teenager. It took 5 pumps for an accurate shot at 25-30 feet. I had a great hide to shoot from and was very successful with that 317. My br...
