House Finches

Black Jack, It is true, I do not have a bird feeder near any of the purple martin houses. So that might explain why I never have any native Sparrows or Finches bother my martin houses. All Bird Feeders did was bring in Squirrels which chewed holes in my house, get in the attic, and cause destruction...

Native Sparrows

I have never had a Native Sparrow show any interest in the purple martin house.
The only time I get to see Native Sparrows is when I feed them thistle in the winter when snow covers the ground. Which is only once or twice per winter here in the Memphis, TN area.

New Landlord Anxiety

Have you got the martins used to you yet? By this time, I would have gone outside talking to the martins and gotten them used to me walking to within the closest corner of your pool's shallow end without flying away. While I talk to them, they chatter back at me. By the middle of the season, I can g...

Dive Bombing Purple Martins

KIllery, I knew you were going to have a successful first year when you said that the martins dive bombed you. They were guarding THEIR house from the stranger - YOU! As you spend more time around them and let them learn you are not a threat, then they will stop dive bombing you. Unless you change y...

Where is repeat where is DornCounty? The PMCA Forum wonders

Matt F., I also have been wondering where DornCounty (in reality Andrew of Parsons, KS) is and how well he is doing. DornCounty was last active on March 09, 2018. Every time I hear from someone with years of Purple Martin wisdom and knowledge like Andrew, John Miller, Emil Pampell, Lewis Scott, Scul...

2013 Debate on Variations of Lewis Mod to Conley II entrance

I found one of the first if not the first PMCA Forum Topic that introduced the Lewis Modification to Conley II entrances on May 4, 2013. http://www.purplemartin.org/forum/viewtopic.php?t=21214&highlight=lewis+sreh I think it is interesting that Lewis Scott, John Miller, and Emil Pampell debated the ...

Trio Musselman and Choice of SREH

Rob is talking about a Trio Musselman or Trio Pioneer Martin House. Rob, Your doors with Crescent or Excluder SREH are excellent choices. I have changed multiple Trio houses from original 6" x 6" compartments with round hole doors to double compartments with Crescent SREH. Those houses are full now....

Lewis Modification on Conley II entrance

Alan, I have 3" PVC Conduit UV resistant arches cut and ready to go exactly as Archer has described. The interior of these PVC arches are smooth as glass so no work is required except glue them on. We will discuss how to mount them onto the face of the Conley II entrance before they arrive in the ma...

Re: This is first for my Colony

Coolwhips, Do you have egg shells or calcium for your martins? I suspect that your colony could double. Every time my sister in Seguin, TX doubles her colony it fills up. She is at 36 and believes that 72 would fill up. My father's colony in Oenaville, TX was always full. Relocating your Trio Wade p...

Porch Trough in Porch Elevator

Alaningeorgetown,
I hope these pictures show what the trough in the porch elevator of a Lewis Modification to Conley II entrance looks like.
Maybe the pictures can give you an idea how to set up your porch steps. I have confidence in your abilities to apply the information as you see fit.

European Starlings breaching SREH

Brad, That is good news. I looked at your pictures again and can see the crescent shape. You were also careful not to interfere with the critical 1 3/16" height from the top of the entrance to the bottom of the Conley II dip. I hope you never have a starling breach again. A while back, Lewis specula...

Brad, I noticed your WEPs were flush with the top of the Conley II and how that decreased the "shoulders" (upper, outer corners) of the Conley II entrance. I meant to ask you if that restricts any of the purple martins entering and exiting. The Lewis Mod to Conley II entrances does not restrict any ...

Proper Lewis Modification to Conley II entrance

Alan, You must be frustrated by the continued breaching of starlings through your Conley II entrances. Especially after you elevated the porches. Some people will advise you that the Conley II entrance is okay by itself. As you have experienced, that is not true. Porch elevators are an excellent add...

Attaching Porch Elevators to Troyer Porch

I like the ability to disassemble and replace any part of the Lewis Mod so I attach the Porch Elevators with 2 of #6-32 x 1/2" long Pan Head Machine Screws and Nylon Insert Nuts. I use only Stainless Steel machine screws and nuts so they don't corrode. I drill the holes for the screws and nuts with ...

Lewis Modification to Conley II and Crescent SREH

Bmurphy, I am so sorry to hear about European Starlings breaching your Conley II and Crescent SREH. As deancamp has stated, others have had problems with European Starlings breaching these SREH. In 2012, Mr. Lewis faced this problem and came up with a solution that is called the Lewis Modification. ...

Lewis SREH

As Lewis suggested, there are past posts on the PMCA Forum which outline the reasons why the Lewis Modification works and how it can be applied to different SREH. http://www.purplemartin.org/forum/viewtopic.php?t=21214&highlight=lewis+sreh https://www.purplemartin.org/forum/viewtopic.php?f=2&t=31761...
