Re: Martins in Gulf Shores Alabama

I can confirm my first 2010 Martin sighting. While golfing I spotted about 12 martins cruising a small pond. The weather has been cold but will be warming into the 60s. Being from the north I feel fortunate to get an early look. Heh Joe, We missed you at the ECPMA meeting this morning. We were just...

Nesting trays

Hi Bull, I too use nest trays in all my houses and do use the picket fence idea but don't double up on the material for weight reasons. I've also used a 2 inch forstner bit to cut depressions in my wooden trays to anchor the nest cup. It works very well. You can even overlap the forstner cuts to mak...

Band #ON 525

Hi Greg, This is a distance of only about 12 miles from my house. Out of the 200 we banded here and there, only one has been seen in the area and I do not have any of my banded birds here. There must be a lot of dispersal throughout the region. Keep a lookout for Red bands ON 300-600...and let me kn...

Red Band: ON 525

Just wanted to report that one of the young we banded last summer arrived at my colony today. She looked very nice and quickly settled in with the rest of the martins. She had many suitors approach her. She was banded at one of our neighboring colonies just 25 minutes from me. How cool is this?

Hi Stan, Sorry to hear about the snow.....I do hope your martin does well. The temperature is supposed to rise to 54 F today so this will give the martins and swallows a food advantage. Russ has six martins at his site as of last night. I just can't believe they would have traveled there during the ...

Freezing Martins

Here is a picture of my friend Russ's two martins which came in yesterday to unusual cold temperatures and snow. They will need some crickets soon if they are to survive until this Wednesday when the weather is supposed to clear. He lives in Kingsville, Ontario.

Hi Bill, I've used something very simple to patch holes. Tissue paper and lepages white glue in many layers adds strength to all of the gourds which have cracked. They paint up well and there is no need to sand. I used this to make paper puppets etc. with the kids and added newspaper to the mix. Ver...

Hello Devere, How are you? These martins seem to be very late but very healthy in this migration photo and they will be spared the wrath of IKE by being late. Your Northstar houses seem to be their favorite . Your workmanship is apparent in these photos. Great job..... Great photos and thanks for sh...
