Sad News

I received a call yesterday stating that our colony had been sheared by heavy forced winds during a nasty storm causing all eggs to be destroyed. Three ten day old young were saved and relocated at a nearby colony with similar siblings. It looks like it is back to the drawing board on this one. Moth...

Father's Day Surprise and Holiday Beach Site Success

Our satellite site at Holiday Beach Conservation Area has resulted in a remarkable success after relocating a pair of tree swallows. The swallow house is located 25 feet from the castle. After lowering the house and doing a nest check with my son and grandson, we were happy to view 11 nests with 45 ...

Dave I think the longer perches are standard on the Alamo houses now. This particular house was one of the first ones made. I had to modify the door entrances to be able to add nest trays. I also added the longer aluminum perches to this house. They were only as long as the porch on this older mode...

Ontario Martins Migrating

A Holiday Beach Migration counter managed to view over 1200 martins passing by the Hawk tower on September 1, 2011. " Stars of the show today were the swallows, especially Purple Martins which totalled 1275." said Steven Kolbe. Now I wonder where they came from? I thought the migration here was over...

Dale, That is great news to hear that you are willing to carry the Torch in the Tavistock area. I saw your post in April about a martin looking at your housing. Did you have any takers? Jack's eulogies were very inspiring and certainly touched the hearts of many. Such a beautiful testimony for those...

Winch Safety at Home or Away

Do you have a concern about winch failure or vandalism. Have a look at what can be done. You will require a universal or crescent wrench to secure your winch handle. If the winch fails, the handle will rest itself next to the pole. This also prevents others from trying to raise or lower your house. ...

Gourd Problem

Hi Kelly, Lots of moisture for sure from what I can see in your pics! I'd probably be changing some of them out asap to alleviate the problem from what appears to be a long build up of manure in the gourd. This occurs only in some housing but I take it that the gourds are more noticeable. If the mar...

How much to feed

That's great that they are taking the supplemental feeding! How long did you have to try feeding before they started taking the eggs? I like that they let you know when they are hungry--so cool! I tried to feed five returning martins two weeks ago when we had snowy, cold and wet weather. The martin...

Martins having a Picnic...Not

The weather has been so called and rainy here in Essex, Ontario that the martins have finally learned to eat flipped eggs and to take eggs from a bed and breakfast. This is really a large one.....smile. I am so happy that they come to the window or fly over when they are hungry. Two dozen eggs have ...
