Balga's Canadian Double Taverner

Well with the help of my son the martin house finally made it up complete with a flock of martins. I do hope the returning birds will like the 32 compartment configuration. My only concern is the competition by the males for the compartments because of the side by side set-up. A divider can be added...

Blue gourds and blue blue bird houses

I painted and changed up 3 blue bird houses with 1 1/2 inch holes and have noticed the sparrows checking them out as of this a.m.. I haven't seen them enter yet other than peek in. As for my gourds, I tried Scully's idea with the same type of gourd and have not seen anything around them yet. This wi...

Well this clinger house has generated a lot of discussion here on the forum and I welcome positive comments from those who have tested it or constructed one. I for one will take this house and see what happens and report back when the martins take up residence later this Spring. I just hope that we ...

Congratulations Tony! It looks like you are out to a great start for the season. Did the martins prefer any particular housing style or hole?

Yes, Dick the entire house is cut and assembled from aluminum. Compartment sizes are 7x12 and the roof gutter design eliminates water from settling on the entrances. I cut down on the side ventilation holes because of our very cool spring weather. The martins need the extra warmth. By the way, since...

CLinger 10 with sparrow trap

Now just in case the sparrows find the clinger interesting I think this will help to discourage them.

Clinger house unporched/porched

There has been so much discussion about using porches with starling resistant entrances that I think we can compromise here. I've posted a pic of my newly constructed Balga clinger 10 which I will test this spring in Ontario. Although it is porchless, it has additional porches for the martins to ret...

Tree Swallows still flying through Essex, Ontario, Canada

I was surprised to see a group of Tree Swallows flying through the Essex area this morning. The weather has not been the greatest for them the past few days with the night temperature hovering above freezing and the daily temperature just above 50 degrees. In addition, turkey vultures, and broad win...

Plenty of martins still around

The four remaining young which were victims of blowfly infestation fledged last Saturday and all seems to be going well with them. I investigated their nest yesterday and found some blowfly larvae still present. It really helped to change out the nests and I would still recommend this to any Landlor...

Crescent Excluder Gourd

I purchased some of the crescent gourds gourds manufactured by Duke S. as well and mounted the porch 1/2" inch below the entrance. I drilled my own holes and there has been no problems so far. I don't think any gourd is starling proof but starling resistant. We need to make sure that we take the nec...
