Keep up the good work Caroline and AllenH. I'm trying to start a colony in southern Manitoba and its your fledgelings that give me hope for next year. I've had a few visitors this spring but no serious interest. Still a small chance for this year but more likely next year.

That's a good question. The sreh entrances are set at 1 3/16th, so if you would size it down to 1 1/16 OR 1 inch you would keep the martins out. On another thread I learnt that 7/8th keeps the sparrows out of a tree swallow nest. So I would try 1 inch top to bottom.

Agree with Moser, a little 12 gauge medicine to the rescue. But they say an ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure! What size are those slotted entrances you are talking about?

ya gots to be sneaky with them persky vermin, carry the gun with you on the mower and blast em when they aint expecting it. In my case, don't have any martins yet, I waited till they had laid eggs and were committed to the house. I put a glue trap inside and had em the next morning. If you decide to...

I checked out the houses in Morris this morning, at least 20 birds flying around. They looked awesome. They sure were in tight to the trees like you said. I am not home during the day, but one of these mornings hoping to have a few birds of my own. Do you think adding gourds to a T14 would help attr...

That is a nice surprise. I live in the Altona area which is about 30 miles south of Morris. I am trying to start a new colony and have not had any visitors so far. In my travels through southern Manitoba I see a lot of old housing with very few birds. Its always encouraging to see some, I will look ...

I took one out with the shotgun today, then used him to test the balance on my new homemade S+S controller, worked perfectly!

Still snow on the ground in Southern Manitoba, a week of cold temps have not helped either. Still freezing every night. By the end of the week warming up. Should bring some birds to town.

Metal would be very slippery for the martins to perch on, wood would give them a grip, its up to you.

The felt provides another layer of water protection, don't think this is what your after so I wouldn't bother. What I would do is put down a little tar to get them to stick to the roof, then tack em down with a few nails. Also for a ridge cap, I would use an outside corner molding, should be able to...
