Re: Just a couple pictures

Hey Fuzz, that's fantastic! Good to know you can keep them alive. After I had mine trained, I put the leftovers on an elevated tray. They soon found them. After I ran out of Crickets, microwaved eggs were the next trick. I had to flip them to get them started, and as before left the leftovers on the...

Re: Where are all the adult birds.

They do have site fidelity if they had a successful year. Its too early to expect all of your Adult birds to be home by now. Also a good portion of the adults die every year, and your returning Sub adults from last year will be the last of the Adults to return this year.

Re: How do I discourage Starlings

Hold on there, No need to cut a grove in your porch plate. Just position the entrance plate so that the bottom of the opening is no more than a quarter inch above the level of the porch.(you will have to modify hole as you suggested) The Lewis Mod is to prevent starling from getting in, in those cas...

Re: Martins and bluebirds...?

If you have an established martin colony, you may be allright. If they start giving you trouble you can gradually lower the rack a couple of feet at a time. Leave a few hours between moves so they get used to it. Eventually shifting to a shephards hook on the ground. Slowly move to a suitable locati...

Re: I need more Females

Its typical having more males than females at this stage of migration. Males more often arrive before females in all age classes except with the SY'S where the females arrive before the males. By your numbers it looks like you are set up for a major increase this year. Have a great one.

Re: A newbie with calendar and ID questions

If you look at the dates on this report of last year's arrivals into Virginia, you will see that some had arrived by this date last year, also that many had not yet received their martins at this date. What I am trying to say is that there is still lots of time for martins to arrive at your location...

Re: Dawn Song or Daytime Chatter?

I had both and played them in rotation all day long. You want your volume as loud as possible. I purchase an outdoor horn speaker and cranked it up till it started distorting, then turned it down from there a bit. It does get somewhat annoying at times, so when I was out working in the yard I would ...

Re: Buffalo Gnats

I don't know about your Flyaway product but I do know of another product. Raid Max-home insect killer. I also deal with gnats and this product is great. It contains pyrethrin as the active ingredient. Pyrethrin kills bug on contact. I spray it on the outside of the house. It comes in an aresol can. ...

Re: Site fidelity

Fuzz, some martins can get near 10 years old, but the average is no where near that. Because researchers are using my colony in their studies, they have banded a lot of martins at my place. I do remember now that there was a banded pair here last year. We shall see if they return to my site and nest...

An sy banded female showed up here in 2016 and nested successfully. She was born and raised the previous summer in a colony about 60 miles from here. She returned 2 more years to nest. She stayed on the same house but did use different holes. She did not return last summer.

Re: Arrival dates - causes?

Fact, martins are gregarious, meaning they like to be with other martins. Maybe you have some early arrivers in your colony and everbody likes to hang out until their own gang shows up? In cold weather communal roosting requires martins to get together. Maybe you are closer to a preferred feeding si...

I did the same as John Miller except I used thick walled pipe. Worked great. No entrapment last year whereas I had 4 the year prior.

Re: Question about feeding trays

Mine has about the same size lip, and yes, I do lose some. But, the birds will come down to the ground too and get what's fallen off. Other species of birds also find the stuff of the ground and make use of it.
