Anna, I don't think that would do anything at all to deter HOSP. a few years ago I built a BB house that was billed as HOSP proof with a slanted entrance underneath the house. The HOSP loved it, they would flutter under and go right in, no perches anywhere. In fact none of the houses I trap HOSP in ...

DornCo., maybe you can get your Dad to watch some of the videos of Starlings killing native birds? That might change his mind, and allow you to trap them at his place.
I can't really see anybody becoming a successful landlord without controlling the eurotrash birds.

Icline, alot of people don't want to believe the truth about HOSP, many of them want to reference the mentions of sparrows in the Bible. HOSP are not sparrows they are weaver finches. If your Grandma can't be swayed about the truth of HOSP, she will never host Purple Martins. I feel sorry for you on...

I think it is GREAT that you are teaching youngsters the love of hosting PM's!
You might want to do some research about "sparrow rage syndrome", pulling their nests with that many PM eggs present might trigger it.

NJDevils, I just wanted to thank you again for posting that link about BCC. For the 1st time in 10 yrs of trying, I have BCC nesting in a nestbox. I enlarged the hole to 1-1/2" the BCC's built a beautiful nest mostly of moss, and laid 6 eggs! I added the 1-1/8" hole reducer, and they immediately ret...

I think peoples ignorance of native birds, and acceptance of invasive birds is a tragedy. I try to educate everybody I can about the difference, between the two.

Jimmy Dean commercial results in TV being shot

Has anyone else seen the disgusting ad where the Jimmy Dean "Sun" sets a bowl of cereal out the window and 2 Starlings fly in to eat it?
Grossed me out! Why didn't they use ANY other species???

lewy39, excellent idea! Most new nursing homes are wide open and have retention ponds. Plus, the people living there, are old enough to remember when Martin houses were commonplace and still greatly appreciated by most of society. I have noticed that the old-timers around me remember when their dad ...

Yes David, they are made for bird strikes, I bought 6 of them, and I am sorry I can't remember the cost. I know I didn't buy them online though. I either got them at Orscheln or WildBirdsUnlimited, it has been several years ago, but I do remember a beautiful male Cardinal hit the window and died,tha...

I use the stickers for birdstrikes, I put 1 in the middle of each reflective pane of glass. From my perspective, it doesn't look like much in that open field of glass, but they do work wonders. Since I started using them, not 1 bird has hit my windows. I can't remember what they cost, but it stopped...

Excellent post Emil, do you use a repeating elevator trap at your place?
Is it possible to adjust one to work well on both S&S?
I have my best trapping success with a nestbox trap also, but I would like the trap to work all day, not just once. Especially now when S&S are all looking for holes.
