Glen, that is good news that you didn't find any more casualties. Martineering has its heartbreaks, that's for sure, but the joy of a thriving happy colony is what we all do it for. I hope the rest of your season is joyful  .

There's nothing quite like that first ever nest and young !! Congratulations; you will have lots of enjoyment watching your martins raise their babies, and seeing your colony grow.

Mike, I am totally behind your philosophy on S+S control in your particular situation. Each landlord should choose the greater good for the future of their martin colony, and I believe, as you do, that your martins will not be helped by you insisting that the public accept the killing of one bird in...

PMCA - there's a problem with ordering

There is a security certificate warning that comes up when I try to place an order at the PMCA shop.

That is a really nice looking house. How big are the compartments inside? I see you are using a variety of openings as well - what all do you have?

That is a good solution. I have wondered about that camouflage material that you can buy - just a little square of it, thrown over the wire mechanism, might look kind of "natural" ? Never tried it yet, but I may have to. One thing I've done at a location where we have about 40 nest boxes (the wooode...

Hi Sharon, I just looked as well and cannot see them! It was several years ago that we ordered our second set, but I would think they would still be available. I looked in bird traps and online-shop bird traps - can't think of any other place they'd be. I'll post a question about where they are, hop...

Hi Mary! Ours took some crickets today, which I took out when I saw them perched on the B+B. But they are not overly hungry; a few look a little stressed and I assume they must have just come in .... I flung a few, and put some in the feeder tray. We're all finally having a decent spring (so far) .....

How funny .... never thought I'd be reading and discussing about bird poop  But for sure, when they're wiping their beak, its like us using a napkin - they've just finished a meal. The weather in our area, and yours I guess too has been pretty decent for a change. It sounds like you have the st...

Sharon, we have round holed SGs and I can recommend their insert trap. It is very sturdy, I believe it comes three to a package. We have trapped many starlings and sparrows with them over the years and like them so much that we bought an extra pack for 6 all together - we can now put traps in one en...

Sharon, please don't take down your nestboxes. Patrick is right ... you (a caring bird person) will eventually provide habitat and nesting sites that are very safe for your native birds. If you take down your boxes, those birds must go elsewhere, perhaps to someone who doesn't care as you do. Any ef...

Ryan, we have had three successive bad martin-killing springs in the northern part of the martins range. Starting in May of 2002, many martins have perished during persistent cold/rainy or just marginal weather patterns that covered a large area of the northern states and into southern Canada. It wi...

I also believe they remember from year-to-year. Supplemental feeding is probably the single most impo...

Meem, your martins have been back since the 3rd - that's 2 weeks and if the weather was good in those two weeks then your birds should be strong. If your bad weather breaks in several days, they'll be fine, but crickets in the freezer are always good peace of mind. If you don't need to use them righ...
