I know of martins in Collingwood. There used to be martins in North Bay, in fact a thriving colony once lived there for many years until vandals ruined their housing. Recent springs, most notably 2002, have killed a lot of the more northern martins. But I'm sure there are martins north and east of C...

That is a good question, and one which I never thought to analyze before. Most of ours are sticking their heads out already, but I can narrow it down a bit based on these three nests: No heads visible in a nest with 13 day old young. No heads visible in a nest with 14 day old young. Heads visible in...

Hi Lou, it needs a bit more experimenting, for sure, but I think it may help them make the association between eggs=food, and platform feeder=food (since many of us, including myself until last year, never used their platform "feeder" during summer for anything but eggshells or nesting materials).

A summertime feeding story..........

Last year I experimented with offering supplemental food during a period when I felt insects might be hard to find when our martins were feeding their young. I put eggs and a few crickets into the bed & breakfast, and watched martins from at least 4 nests fly repeatedly to their gourds with food. At...

Pen, that photograph is beautiful in so many ways - have you thought of enlarging, framing, and hanging it so that you can enjoy it all the time - I sure would. I'm sorry about Cricket. Its awful to watch them hopefully waiting for help that never comes. I've been martineering for a long time now, a...

Billie, the chances of driving a parent martin away because you are checking the nest are zero. These birds have only one chance at breeding, and have a very high level of commitment to their nest, and young. Nest checks only help the birds, allowing the landlord to spot problems such as soaking wet...

Nanette, I try to use up my crickets in the same year. Once when I had some that were a year old, I tried them, but they seemed to have lost their substance - maybe freezer burn? I have since been told, though, that crickets can be "rehydrated" ...... soaking in water for a minute or so apparently p...

Nannette, I feel strongly that if food is offered during the summer when they are feeding young, they MAY associate the feeding tray with food the following spring. If this is true, then it would certainly shorten the training time, as the birds who did remember would help to train the rest. A lot m...

Yes, try something through the vent hole ... something long and flexible like one of those plastic cable ties works great.

Al, I'm so happy that you got martins this year and experienced the joy of seeing them fledge successfully. You're "established" now ! I've been reading your posts but due to a computer glitch I haven't been able to post for a while. Good luck with your hip surgery ... my father-in-law had it done, ...

Carl, maybe this will give you a useful idea. Our gourd racks have a very low mounted winch, so we needed a guard that would mount high enough to be useful, yet could be dissassembled so that the rack could be brought down low enough for checking. The stovepipe guard comes off the wood plate by remo...

Jack, a word of caution about nest changes with unfeathered young. Until they get feathers, they cannot keep themselves warm, which is why the mother bird "broods" them. The importance of the "nest bowl" is that the birds stay together, in a confined area, where the mother can keep them under her an...

Bob, I'm sorry about your lost birds. Its hard to see it go that way. I hope your weather improves and that the remaining young can make it OK. If you have a feeder platform, you could try putting crickets or egg on it to assist the parents in finding food for them. I've done this several summers in...

Sheryle, if you have a feeder tray, try putting scrambled egg out. I did that one summer, and the parents repeatedly took egg from the tray directly back to their young. They will take help if they need it, and especially when feeding young, I believe this is one of the easiest way to get birds used...
