Sparky - I had thought of something similar as well - in fact, I have tried in the past putting my hand in a black sock or glove - but that didn't make a difference, perhaps because I was using my "soothing comforting" voice  at the same time  DUH again. A puppet would be interesting to ...

Hey Laverne, I guess your last post was the same time as mine. So you'll see, it continued to work for the time I had that nestling. Helping nestlings is SO MUCH easier if they all behave as this one did, and as you have experienced during nest changes. I'll add this bit of info - in my supergourd h...

Laverne, I'm denser. I sat there this morning, talking to him in a soothing, loving voice, which my 2 year old great-niece would have found comforting, but which was probably quite horrifying to that little bird. DUH DUH. I know what you mean about the frustration of trying to force feed - you want ...

An interesting experiment

We have a martin with young in a supergourd hanging on a shepherds hook. These martins are so easy to peek in on that I do it several times every day. They looked healthy, but there are six of them, and these parents have not been observed going to the feeder tray at all. So I thought how do I give ...

A new discovery - getting them to gape!

Well, this is a new discovery for me, anyway  I found a baby, about 13 days old, on the ground yesterday evening. He/she looked fine - no apparent reason to be down. But I decided to keep him overnight, and feed him crickets. So, the usual difficult thing - force the mouth open, shove down some...

Hi Salvy. It took me ten years before I could do it myself (my husband did all the dirty work in the meantime). But I eventually had to do it, and I felt as sick as you. But the others are right - once you begin to witness the carnage S+S wreak upon your native birds, you will feel less horror at do...

Hi Emil, thanks for your response. Our gourds are bolted to the wooden crossarm, so the only movement possible is a slight side-to-side pivot on the bolt - the gourds can't be tipped forward to cause the eggs to roll. So I was thinking that if it were a hawk/owl dragging the adult bird out, that cou...

Hey Joe, where in Essex County are you? If you're interested, there's a great club called the Essex County Purple Martin Association (I am secretary) that has a lot of motivated and enthusiastic members in Windsor, Amherstburg, Leamington, Essex, Blenheim, Woodslee, Tilbury, and some even farther af...

What is the most likely culprit?

I checked our gourd racks today at the golf course. I found three nests with all eggs out of the nest cup and rolled towards the front of the gourd - some on the interior porch - a total of 17 eggs that now won't become martins. :-( What do you feel would do this? In previous years we have often fou...
