Re: Jumpers

From my experience there are basically two reasons why the babies jump prematurely: extreme heat or parasites (mites etc). Make sure to check your gourds for parasites, and if you have them, take measures to get rid of them. How you do that, is up to you. I will not recommend or get into any specifi...

Re: Hopefully my season is starting.

Mitch,

I don't think you need to run a dawn song as long as you have martins staying. As mentioned, they do a much better job at dawn-singing. Don't settle for two yet! SY's are still on the hunt.

Jason, thats is great news. Keep track of them. Pay attention at sunset, and look for them coming back in for the night. If they do, that's even better news.

I see it all the time. One or two decide to stay when the racks are lowered. For some reason it's mostly females. (they work harder  ).

Martin collision

Had a ASY male from our colony collide with a robin this morning. We were sitting on our porch and we could even hear the thump when they collided. Both fell to the ground. The robin got up and flew off. I ASY picked up. Nothing appeared to be broken, but he acted very confused. I brought him to the...

Re: Purple Martins Were Here, But Now Not

Agree with opening the house earlier. Follow your state’s arrival map closely, and open your house up when you see arrivals in northern NC and VA. By all means play the dawn song every day. Also keep in mind that it takes close to 10 pair to have a reliable return for the next year. I am not saying ...

Re: "Super Colony" ?

We (meaning my wife and I) are headed that way, but we evaluate year by year, an if we determine we can properly manage a Super Colony, that's what we'll do. Again, we have expanded every year for about 3-4 years. The martins are doing very good. We currently have around 60 pair (the SY's haven't re...

Re: Mite - blowfly control and nest management

We don't use sevin. We have been using Permethrin, and it works extremely good for us. Have not had any form of parasites, no jumpers, and no nest changes since. I take the gourds down every year for cleaning and storage. When season is getting close, the gourds get hung up on the racks, pine straw...

Re: Disappointed in PM houses and You?

I to started out with telescoping poles and they can be very frustrating. I now have 2 multi-purpose poles with two houses on each and 4 gourds under each. In my opinion the multipurpose pole is the only way to go. We started with an S&K Barn too. I took it down and threw it on the trash pile. Then...

Re: Migration slows to a crawl for a week.

Thanks for the update. Looking at the 10 day forecast is showing the weather is going to be better and hopefully the weather will be tuning to spring here in NC. I hope so, because it don't feel like spring at all this morning. Have about 35 birds so far, and it was 27 degrees earlier this morning....

Re: Venting gourds

Another way to vent from the back of Troyer horizontal gourds is you use 2 inch round aluminum soffit vent and secure with a little lexel about 2/3rds up from the bottom back of gourd. I have used both threaded PVC elbows and 2 inch soffit vents and they seem to work wonders. Yep, that works too, s...

Re: Venting gourds

Not sure if it will help humidity, but I have seen tests where temps were measured in same type gourds, vented and un-vented. From what I remember, but dont hold me to it, the gourds were Troyer horizontals, and the temp dropped about 5-6 degrees in the vented gourd. You will also have a better air ...

JHCox, I don't see anything sticking out or detrimental on your site. From what I can tell from the sat. pics, your site is located between the fence line and your house (marked green, south-west). Not sure how far it is from the fence, but I would try moving the site further from the fence and hous...
