Re: Enlarge rooms in old Trio?

I'm with William. I borrowed a friends 2 inch knockout punch and punched 2 holes side by side to make an egg shape hole. Google knockout punch to see how they work.

Re: Enlarge rooms in old Trio?

I'm with John. I had to many wing entrapments with 2 inch inner holes. Since making my holes larger, they are 2 inches tall by 3 1/2 inches wide, not one wing entrapment. This was done on a castle and a minicastle 5 years ago. Make those inner holes 3 inches or larger.

Re: Pole Orientation & Distance ???

Bill, I have 5 houseswith gourds under each. They are spaced 30 ft. apart from each other in a straight line. I like the distance because it's easy to mow and also when I lower a house for a nest check the birds in the housing next to the lowered house usually just look at me. The distance keeps the...

Re: new t-14

Use larger screws in same holes or take wooden tooth picks, glue them and stick down in existing screw holes to take up space. That seems to work for me. Use original screws.

Is Tulsa Roost still Going?

Dick, we are going to Tulsa Sat. morn. to visit family and hopefully see what's left of the roost that night. Are they still between 6th and 7th east of Frisco? How many birds are left? We are staying at the Double Tree. Thanks.

Re: Probelms With Mini Castle?

Kyler, The PMCA Archives had an article about this and how to fix. I did it to my minicastle and it helped some. I think I placed a couple pieces of wood, one on top of the house, the other installed on bottom of house. These wood pieces with holes in the center about the same diameter as the pole, ...

Trio House cable

You Trio house fanatics, how often do you replace the cable on your houses? I have a castle and a minicastle and I replaced both cables in July of 2013. Do you get the cable from Erva or PMCA? Do you get it somewhere else? Do you replace with larger diameter cable? Don't know if PMCA even carries th...

Re: My First Purple Martin House / Location (Winter Project)

Check out the North Star house by Bob Buskas. He's Canadian and has plans. It's a 3 level 12 room house that's easy to do nest checks. It looks a lot like your plans. I've built two, easy plans to understand and martins like the spacious rooms. Check him out.

Thanks Dorn, we are leaning towards the Aug. 20th date. Easiest day to get away and have somebody take care of our pets at home.

Dick, can't make the aug. 6 date for the Tulsa roost. What about Aug. 13or Aug. 20. Are there any birds left at these later dates?

Re: Timing of nest checks….

Terry, I drop all 5 houses and gourds every 5 days thruout the season to the very end. I plug comp. that are1-2 days of fledging. I do this on the ground or on a small step stool. I can only drop systems so much before the winches get in the way. I don't recall that birds ever fledged lowering or ra...

Re: Flipping Crickets in July

I started feeding the martins Saturday morning when rain began. Ihave a feeder station that has mealworms oyster shell, and pine straw. It rained all day Saturday and sunday, and now fog this Monday morn. I am rehydrating the last third of 2 large packages of meal worms, approximately 28,000- 30,000...

Re: Rookie Landlord

I have built 2 12unit North Stars. Plans are easy to understand. I laminated a post together to make a 4x4. No straight ones at lumber shop to buy and I think the laminated ones are stronger. Don't use sheathing plywood to build. Paint did not stick. Popped off immediately. Sheathing plywood must mo...

Steve, Do storms ever rip the houses off the small mounting arms? Would it be recommended to tie the two houses together with a metal strap on each roof for more stabilization?

Re: Dead martin with babies

Go to your nearest department store and buy dried meal worms. I get 17.6 oz packages for not much money. About 11000-12000 worms in each package, rehydrate and place close to nest. She might use to feed. I have my birds trained to go to a feeder station to get meal worms, oyster shell, and pine stra...

Re: How to I chase a Hawk away from my colony

I use 4plastic decoys on 10 ft sticks of pvc pipe and move them around the colony every few days. Hawks are perplexed when grabbing a decoy bird. It gives the real birds time to get away. Ialso have 2x4 inch wire around everything which helps.

Re: Dried mealworms

I've been using dried mealworms for years that come from China. No problems at all. I usually rehydrate so the wind doesn't blow them away and place inmy feeder station with pine straw and oyster shell. Right now it's a busy spot. Fun to watch.
