What to do for next year...

It's time to think about next year and improvements on the martin system. I have a Trio Mini Castle, Castle (both rooms enlarged) and a T14. I have plastic gourds under each house. I want to owl proof everything and want to get opinions on doing so. I can see down the road that as this system grows,...

Malcolm I have 50-60 mph gusts all the time when storms come through. I live on a ridge. I,m thinking of using galv. pipe but didn't know what size would fit through the houses. I thought maybe someone has done this and maybe galv. pipe is not the way to go. Maybe aluminum. Also how do people keep t...

I'm going to be replacing my Nature House poles on the Castle and Mini Castle with something different. Any of you people that have done this, I need some imput. The original ones aren't strong enough. Thanks

John, thanks for the info. Are your multipurpose poles with the rope and pulley or did you switch over to winches? Do you use the optional gourd rack add-on? Does the system work well for you?

Strengthen poles

I have a castle and minicastle from Nature House. Has anybody tried putting a smaller pipe inside the poles to make them stronger? Also, I need opinions on the 2" multipurpose pole. Will it bend and break in high wind thunderstorms?

Thanks all for the imput. I guess I'll hang the Bo's up below my houses again and see what happens. I've had some luck with the Super Gourds and Excluder Gourds. I just ordered a couple Troyer Vertical Gourds to try. The martins around here have always liked the Trio houses the best and little by li...

Big Bo Gourds

Back in 05 I bought some Big Bo Gourds plus other types of gourds. I don't know if I've ever had martins in the Bos but sparrows lovem. I installed tunnels on a couple of them. The Bos are smaller than the other gourds and they are translucent and I was wondering if anybody has had luck with this ty...

John, you mentioned caulk or liquid nails above the holes. What do you think about using a bead of clear silicone above the holes?

Jim Ive been building BB houses for years and they all have vents (3/4"drilled holes) or slots in walls and above doors for air circulation. BBs nest 3 times a year around here so air circulation is good especially in the middle of the summer. The babies seem tc be happy in their homes and I don't t...

VENTS (CONT), T-14 & GOURDS

I went to Lowes and actually found the 6 pack of 2" louvered vents in the roofing section. I bought 3 packs. They were $6.98 a pack. I cut the holes with a 2"Forstner bit and then sanded a little with a Dremel drum sander to make the vents fit better. A little silicone around the edges and pushed th...

Thank you all for the information. The screw in elbow that Dick and John were talking sounds like a great idea. Matt, thanks for the T-14 threads. Those 2 inch louvered vents I think is the way to go if I can find them. If not, the 5/8" forstner bit at 45 degrees will do the job. Thanks again for al...

Finishing the inside of birdhouses

On July 1 there was a post titled "T-14 finally finished" and they talked about a post titled about Finishing the inside with Thompsons water seal or using oil base stain in gourds. I have been building bird houses for years, specifically T-14's, and many bluebird houses. I have yet finished any of ...

FIXING THE SQUEAKY TRIO HOUSE

IN THE ARCHIVES A DR. DILLINGER TALKS ABOUT LESSENING SQUEAKY NOISES ON HIS TRIO HOUSE. I HAD THE SAME NOISES WHEN RAISING OR LOWERING MY MINI CASTLE. HE SAYS TO ENLARGE THE METAL HOLES IN THE HOUSE WHERE THE POLE SLIDES THROUGH AND THEN TAKING TWO PIECES OF 3/8 INCE PLYWOOD, DRILLING HOLES SLIGHTLY...

Repeating Bait Trap

I have a wire sparrow trap that catches lots of sparrows but few starlings. It's to small. I've got plans for the S&S controller but feel that it would catch bluebirds which might spook them out of the country. How well does the PMCA Repeating Bait Trap work? Does it catch starlings? My sparrow trap...

Susan Where do you get fusion paint-at the hardware store? Also, in the instrution booklet for the S&S, it states to place next to trees and outbuildings within 40-100 ft of martin housing. My outbuilding is about 135 ft from closest martin house and probably where I would put it. Is that to far? Yo...

Susan I don't think there's anything wrong with the S&K Gourd. They are just very light weight and thin walled, about 19 oz. compared to 35 oz. for a Super Gourd. I bought them from PMCA several years ago but they don't sell them anymore. They haven't been out in the sun much so they're not degradin...
