Re: predator guards

I was talking with Mel from Hilltop Specialties the other day and he said they were designing an owl guard for Troyer gourds and probably be available in January through PMCA.

Re: Trio mini castle porches

I use crescent and excluder doors on my castle and minicastle. Both houses have been enlarged. The martins like them a lot. You don't need to add an extra porch on top of the existing porch. I don't use traction tape. Never had starling problems. Both houses are nearly full every year.

Gourd Racks

I'm looking to buy a Troyer K-series or Super system or a Gemini gourd rack. All are on a 3 inch square pole. I would like to know from people that have these which system is easiest to install a wire cage that winches up and down with the gourds? Also which is easier to do nest checks with the wire...

Re: 30 plus!!!

If you drop your house every 5-6 days for nest checks, the babies get use to you. I drop my houses to the very end of the season. I'vebeen doing this and the project martinWatch for many years. I don't recall ever flushing babies out of their nests. I do use the rag and string thing on babies that m...

Re: Trio castle-Granpa pole qstn

I have a minicastle and a castle. Both poles have been bent severely by storms at the base of each pole. I have since ordered new poles and reinforced them with pipes on the inside of each pole. That was in 2013. No problems since. I do try to lower them if a storm is coming. I lower to the middle s...

Re: Purple Martins Using My Modification

Kyler, I guess you used the Troyer cap and collar on those gourds. It says to cut a1 1/4 inch hole and insert collar with caulk. The top of the cap area is not wide enough. It's about 2 1/2 inches wide. It looks like you cut out some of the side area on top. How did you do that a jigsaw or some kind...

Re: Venting Mini Caslte / Castle

kyler, I haven't vented my castle or minicastle, used them foryears that way and never have had an issue. I have put 3/4 inch Styrofoam in the attics. Don't know if it helps but it's there. The vents that come in the doors seem to be sufficient for me.

Re: Bob Buska's North Star

Hummingbird, the attic vents are called louvered soffit vents. They are 2 inch diameter and aluminum. I get them at Lowes. The original plans did not have attic vents. Bob's in Canada so probably don't need any up there. I'm in Missouri like you where it gets hot and humid so I put them in. Dave

Re: Bob Buska's North Star

The pictures you see in this thread are on the original North Star house I built in 2011. It lasted only 2seasons. My fault. I got the wrong plywood. It was house sheathing and would pop the paint off the house immediately. I scraped and painted several times but gave up. It wouldn't stick. The shea...

Re: Conley II Entrances ??

You are right about breaching occasionally but at my place not often at all, maybe once a season. They really struggle to get in and out, which gives me time to get the pellet gun out and take care of the problem. I like the Troyer vertical gourds with conley 11 entrances and the martins do to. dave

Re: Need door suggestions and help for my new T-22 please.

Kevin, I made my T14 out of cedar back in 06. I'm using the aluminum adapter plates from PMCA. They last forever. I use both the excluder and the crescent openings. I outlined the plates with a pencil on the doors and than used a jigsaw to cut them out just a hair larger. The plates are attached to ...

Re: Question about reinforcing Castle pole

John, if your castle is using the stock Trio pole, the bottom section is 1 3/4 inch od. Inside that section a 1 1/2 inch od gal. pipe will fit with a little play.

Re: Question about reinforcing Castle pole

John, in 2013 I replaced the bottom pole of my castle with a new one and added a 1 1/2 inch gal. pipe inside the bottom pole. I may have added a pipe inside the middle part of the pole, like conduit but really don't remember. My problem has always been the bottom section of the castle pole. They kin...

Re: Question about Trio Castle

John, The cable is only 1/16 inch diam. pretty small. I replaced mine about 5yrs. ago because it was showing some corrosion and a few broken strands in the cable. It stays outside on the pole all year, so more weather related stuff than if taken indoors during the winter. It's never broke during the...

Re: Using Purple Martin Decoys To Minimize Raptor Predation On Purple Martins

Steve , I use martin plastic decoys attached to 10 ft. pvc pipe. I have 2 ft. pvc pipe anchors in the ground around my colony so that I can move my decoys around every 4-5 days. Keeps the hawks guessing and seems to work pretty good.

Where do you get the dove decoys and how much? Thanks dave
