Nichole, What a beautiful setup. Do you have a lot of martins nest in your martin housing?

Welcome to the forum.

Dorn, I do find that odd. I had housing up for so many years they began falling apart and nary a purple martin in sight. Once I put up gourd racks my colony began. I only have one metal house up now and not one martin has ever used it. That martin is gorgeous. I wonder if it is a really old bird sin...

Delma,

I am so happy for you. Your posts for the past years were heart wrenching. I am so glad you have birds that will be nesting for you. You deserve to have your houses fill up with martins for as long as you have waited. Good luck with your martins this season.

I agree with Leandortree, I do not believe martins eat mosquitoes, if they do, I cannot imagine that they eat many of them. It is funny a friend of ours said you have no mosquitoes here your martins must eat so many mosquitoes, I want to put up housing too. When they left I laughed and my husband as...

MamaBruff you are a hoot. You had some good analogies there. I just think once my garden plants start blooming and reseeding there is plenty of food for the songbirds until fall. Prior to having martins I fed birds all summer long and it would make me sick watching the hawks sit on one of my arbors ...

Mike,

Glad you are beginning to get some of your birds back. I do know that they love to be around water. I suspect it draws more insects. Will the bayou ever be filled with water again or are they filling it in with soil?

Hope you have a wonderful martin season.

I offer egg shells right away when they arrive. Last year they loved sitting on my breakfast platform feeder I made them and they were eating the eggshells 2 to 3 weeks prior to nest building. Also, I had other birds woodpeckers, robins etc that flocked around the eggshells and helped themselves. I'...

Postmen...that was cute birdbrat. I feel so sorry for these little tykes. What a journey and to endure cold/heat, drought/storms, predator birds etc. It is wonderful that you are taking such good care of your birds. I hope it warms up for you soon.

I suppose they do serve a purpose. I'm just thankful we do not have big snakes like that here. I would be worried about my koi and other pond fish not to mention my martins. Thank goodness for whoever came up with adding the netting to your poles. It is good you cut them out and carry them off to an...

I feed birds all winter and spring. Once I see the hawks coming through my yard trying to take out my songbirds I stop feeding them and the hawks seem to move on. I hate to have the hawks around when my martins come around. The martins are so dawg gone loud that it will surely attack my colony. Once...

Thank you all for your comments. If all my birds come back, I will have 13 available gourds. I guess I will just keep these for now and see what happens. I thought that there were not many birds in this area as I tried for so long to get them. However, I was completely surprised when I had gone from...

Purchasing gourds/housing in anticipation

In the past two years I went from 4 pair to 16 pair of martins (thank you Wendell). I was offering 21 gourds and a metal house (which never gets used for various reasons). I know it is very hard to tell how much growth a colony will attain each year. But, I am curious how each of you have added to y...

I have always looked for positive reasons to live in the frozen tundra of North Dakota. THIS...is the foremost positive reason. We do not have snakes like that. WOW. If I encountered that, you could follow my trail all the way into the house and I would need to change my pants. YIKES. We have garden...

I cannot handle the wait anymore. What a long and cold winter and it just never ends. I am climbing at the walls. I keep watching the scout report and the movement is so slow. In the past we started seeing them this far north in 2 or 3 weeks. I hope the weather gets nicer and this holds true this ye...

Deb, I completely understand your excitement. I am so glad your little buddies showed up when you need them. How neat that they remembered you flipping food to them. I tried flipping to my birds last year but they were not hungry enough to eat. Then the weather got nice and I did not have that oppor...

I had to chuckle, I went out and googled sugarbirds and came up with many videos the the Bananaquits videos. I saw one video where the bird was so enthralled with eating white sugar he dove head first into the sugar and started taking a sugar/dust bath. While reading I see they used to eat fruit and...
