Steve, I love reading your posts. I'm curious, how do you manage to keep track of specific birds in such a large colony. I am trying to keep track of the birds in my small colony and it is tough. I have males jumping from one gourd to the next, most seem to use the perches on one of my racks even th...

ha ha...you really do have one little piggy there. I always feel for the runts. I'm glad your season is going well. My birds are still trickling in. I feel like an over protective mommy waiting for everyone to get back to their perspective gourds for the year. Enjoy your birds and thanks for sharing...

Beautiful photos. It looks like you are filling up fast.

I'm so thankful as of now the sparrows that were around this spring seem to have left my yard, leaving my martins and other birds to nest in all the birdhouses.

Good luck with your martins and thank you for sharing your photos.

Made me think some mechanic or airline worker was trying to make their job easier by adding housing so they could pass their time away watching the martins while working.

How nice. Seeing how intelligent martins are I suspect they can out maneuver those big flyin planes anyway.

Do you see that the parent birds are still using that gourd? Perhaps they have not laid eggs yet. OR...it might be they laid the eggs too early and the eggs were not viable due to the cold weather. It is really hard to say because it might have been a predator or even one of the parent birds perishi...

Last year I had a pair of tree swallows that were very persistent about living in a gourd on my martin rack. I was trapping sparrows and the female swallow went into the gourd that had my sparrow trap. When I let her out she decided to use one of the wooden houses I had up for them as I think she wa...

Sharon, The martin that was visiting your site, is he still visiting periodically? Regarding your question about whether martins are easier to obtain in the city. I waited for so many years when we moved out to the country and thought the same thing. Every house in town whether falling apart or not ...

Jose,

Nice to see the little guys are starting to get their beautiful blue feathers in your photo. Looks like you have a great setup and have spoiled your birds feeding them mealworms. Very nice.

JL, I have a dozen of those traps and trap all starlings and sparrows while I am waiting for the martins to show up. They are THE BEST trap! I also had a couple sparrows not set the traps off and will be trying the rubber bands as well. Very good idea. Thank you.

I had one ASY male that kept coming and peeking at all the gourds for a few days. Then he started bringing 3 or 4 females. Finally a female became interested and started spending the night with him. They both kept bringing more and more birds until I had 4 ASY pairs. It was so fun to watch the lone ...

I am sure the traps do not bring in more sparrows. They are just very prolific and always looking for a place to eat and nest.

You should learn how to shoot. It is very easy and then you would not have to wait for hubby to come home.

I do not know the answer to your question. However, I have gone to nest boxes that I know sparrows are in...and in the middle of the night flushed the sparrow. It is always the female that I catch.

It is really sad that we are so inundated with these pesky birds. Even though it is uncomfortable getting rid of birds, I do believe it is necessary for our song birds and purple martins to survive.

Good job.
