SY males

Well guys looks like I'm closer to saying Next Year :-( I have two different SY males here every morning and evening for the past 10-14 days and they can't seem to convince a female to stay..... They are each occupying and defending different gourd racks. Still playing the Dawnsong though. Well at l...

Re: Looking on the bright side!

Yes I agree. I moved the one gourd rack last Saturday to the other side of the pond and had 5 or 6 martins swarming it a day later. If my committed sy male doesn't find himself a mate I will have to wait to the mid July and August for the roost to form. I will get thousands of birds a day each eveni...

Re: Looking on the bright side!

Sharon, Yes I learned a lot this year. I watched a tree swallow take a martin to the ground last week. That pair, that was hanging around for a few days, is long gone. I do have one remaining SY male that is persistent in driving off all Bluebirds and Tree swallows from the one gourd rack. I had as ...

Re: I have never seen so many visitors!!

Yes it is June 1st and had three here this morning. I pair of tree swallows took one of the martins to the ground. I have 4 nesting pair of tree swallows all on Shepard hooks about 50 feet from the 4 Martin systems. Tonight I had 5 or 6 here for several hours and I think 4 may be spending the night....

Re: 1st year in PA, throwing in the towel

Gary,

I came home this evening and had 5 or 6 birds here for a few hours. I think 4 may be spending the night. We have a solid two to three weeks left to attract birds.

Re: 1st year in PA, throwing in the towel

I had an SY pair show up this morning and a single SY male hanging around also. The SY pair were run off by a pair of tree swallows. This will be the last year tree swallows are nesting at my site. I will be closing all bluebird and not make any gourds available for the tree swallows. I'm going to p...

Sub Adult arrivals Midwest

Hi Everyone,

I haven't really seen an influx of Sub Adult arrivals in Northeast Ohio. I was just trying to get a feel if they have already moved through or maybe the large arrival hasn't happened yet.

Re: Update (Northwest KS)

Evan I use super gourds and Troyer horizontals with either crescent entrances or Conly II tunnels and porches. I don't seem to have any issues with the Bluebirds but the tree swallows are next to impossible keeping them out of the gourd racks. I wait until they select a gourd and then move it down t...

Re: To seat or not to seat ( airgun pellets )

Peter these guns can run several thousand dollars. The marauder also has a shrouded barrel which is like a silencer. You can shoot and your next door neighbor will never hear it.

Re: To seat or not to seat ( airgun pellets )

Peter, I bought mine about 4 or 5 years ago and I bought the Benjamin Marauder .22 caliber. This was the least expensive at the time and I think it ran around 490 for gun and scope and then another hundred or so for the hand pump to fill the gun. Benjamin now offers a Discovery model for 420.00 whic...

Re: Update (Northwest KS)

Evan337, I have two gourd racks off the front porch to left of beach. Most housing in my area uses gourds. The T-14 was here when I bought the house but is much too close to tree line. In 2013 and 2015 the gourd racks in front of house to left of the beach housed one pair each year. I'm thinking of ...

Re: To seat or not to seat ( airgun pellets )

PCP's are designed to have pressure at all at times especially during long periods of storage in order to protect the seals. To answer your question the answer is Yes you can leave it charged over night.

Re: To seat or not to seat ( airgun pellets )

Yes John according to the manufacture. I bought it as a combination unit from pyramid air which is a fairly reputable dealer. The explained to me that is somewhat common with springers. My consistency with PCP is night and day!

Re: Looks like this year is not my year....

Not sure but I will guarantee you I will not have a nesting bluebird or tree swallow on this property next year. I've had fewer sightings this year than the previous 4 and believe it's due to the tree swallows.

Re: To seat or not to seat ( airgun pellets )

Archer, It stands for pre charged pneumatic. It is the type of air rifle where you either use an auxiliary pump or scuba tank to put air in the rifle. Typically around 3,000 psi and this will give 30-60 shots before you need to recharge or supply new air to the gun's reservoir. There is no spring, n...

Re: To seat or not to seat ( airgun pellets )

Peter, I'm not going to be much help here. I bought the exact same gun and couldn't hit the broad side of a barn with it. No matter how tight I tightened my scope rings they always ended up loose due to the guns recoil. I constantly had fliers and I used the artillery hold and had the gun tuned........

Re: Looks like this year is not my year....

Tor, Thank you. Right where your red dot is at is a 24 foot tall windmill. The address of my property is 6149 Renninger Rd Akron Ohio 44319. I just added a third gourd rack this spring about half way down from the beach and end of pond on the right hand side. I bought the house on 4-7-2012. 2012 pre...

Check out Chairgun pro app from google or Apple Store. It has every pellet, ballistic coefficients, zero ranges and just about any other component you can think of.

Re: Looks like this year is not my year....

Tor Thanks Tor for the input. When has the heaviest arrival of SY's occurred at your site in SC this year? I have a T-14 on a wooden 6x6 pole about 50 feet away from the trees at about 11:00 around the pond. It would be a monumental job moving that system to say the least. May be easier to just chai...
