Re: Mirrors

Shawn, I have a mix of vertical and horizontal gourds all with Conley II entrances with tunnels and porches on all gourds. Before when I used the mirrors I taped them to the inside of the gourd opening entrance to the point where the Martin was not able to even enter the cavity. He/she would see the...

Re: 2017 Wannabe report

I currently do not have mirrors or eggs although have tried the mirrors in the past. I will move the speaker directly underneath the middle gourd rack pointing up, put my mirrors back in and head out this evening to get some modeling clay. I hope if I do get martins that I get more than one pair. Tw...

Re: 2017 Wannabe report

Sharon, I currently play the Dawnsong 24/7 from a ground speaker about 20 feet from my 3 gourd racks on the other side of my driveway. I think I will run a power horn on the middle gourd rack between the two levels of gourds. Our wave of SY's has really not hit yet this year here in Northeast Ohio. ...

Re: Is this it???

Sharon, You may be on your way out of the Wannabe Club! Good for you. I've seen little to no action at my site. I had 4 adults (3 male & 1 female) hang around for an hour and half on Saturday and haven't seen a martin since. I'm not throwing the towel in yet. I think they were just passing by as the...

Re: 2017 Wannabe report

Well I'm finally at peace with my set-up. There isn't much else I can do. I have 3 gourd racks up with 12 on each rack, all SREH and a mix of Super gourds, naturals and THG all with tunnels, porches and Conley II entrances. I have virtually no S&S as they are eliminated immediately. All I can do at ...

Re: 2017 Wannabe report

Flyin-Lowe, Yes you are correct. I'm about 3/4 to a mile from the Nimisila Roost and do get birds by the hundreds nightly in the month of August. I've done everything I can at this point. I even had Andy and Adam Troyer down from Birds Paradise and they gave me some pointers as well. I took them ove...

Re: 2017 Wannabe report

Hi fellow Wannabes. I am on eastern Long Island, NY where scout reports from as close at 15 miles from here started coming in three weeks ago but I have yet to sight a single PM. I installed a 12-unit Trio a neighbor gave me in the summer of 2012(?), which got instant attention and we have had a fu...

Re: 2017 Wannabe report

Hello Mitch, my father was not trying so you've got someone else in mind..... Good to hear from you none the less. I think I remember when you set up a T-14 in the back of your property and ended up getting 5 pair your first year!! Man I would be bummed to have had to move and start all over again!...

2017 Wannabe report

Well here we go again. I keep looking for updates from Sharon and Mary (Taxidermy Lady and Mama Bruff). There are others as well but I can't think of them at the moment. I was thinking flyin-Lowe's dad was trying to start a colony too but I could be wrong. Anyways I currently have a nest of mallards...

Re: What made this nest?

I'd say it's a black capped chickadee. They nest every year in my yard and there nest always contains moss. Wrens at my house generally have small twigs.

Re: Need photography advice

Shoot in shutter priority with a shutter speed of 2000. Set your ISO at 200 if you have a sunny day. Your photo is currently silhouetted and not exposed properly. Try using spot metering instead of evaluative (canon) or matrix (Nikon I think). Make sure the sun is to your back so the bird is not sil...

Louisiana Tornadoes

Is Steve Kroenke in Southern Louisiana? I heard several tornadoes have gone through the area today causing wide spread damage?

Re: Largest Purple Martin colony? Awesome video

Larry can I ask the type of drone you are using as well as the camera? I've been thinking about buying one especially with the prices dropping. Does your drone use a Go-Pro camera? Any information you can provide would be appreciated.

Thanks,

Re: Discouraged Wannabe

Dave, I'm right there with you! I've had a nesting pair every other year so this is my year off. What I can say is location is everything!! I took a careful look at my site and asked if the martin housing was in the correct spot for me or the martins? My answer came back me. I moved the one system a...

Re: Bristol Ridge Colony New Lexington,Ohio

Bluetick that is an awesome picture!!!! I still had that single SY male on the one rack this morning. He's been here going on three weeks. I take it he's not going to find a mate. I hope he returns next year as an adult and the females will be much more receptive in mating with him.

SY males

Well guys looks like I'm closer to saying Next Year :-( I have two different SY males here every morning and evening for the past 10-14 days and they can't seem to convince a female to stay..... They are each occupying and defending different gourd racks. Still playing the Dawnsong though. Well at l...

Re: Looking on the bright side!

Yes I agree. I moved the one gourd rack last Saturday to the other side of the pond and had 5 or 6 martins swarming it a day later. If my committed sy male doesn't find himself a mate I will have to wait to the mid July and August for the roost to form. I will get thousands of birds a day each eveni...
