Any truth to Martin Imprinting?

Hello everyone, I was just wondering if there is any truth that martins imprint? I live across the street from a large roost here in Akron Ohio on Nimisila Resevior. Last fall was my first experience with martins. I put up a Watersedge 8 suite aluminum house in the summer of 2008. I realize I had th...

Hesitant to do Bluebird nest checks....

Hi Everyone, Well I was not succesful in starting my colony but I am on my third clutch of Bluebirds eggs. Nine fledged from the first two nests. I was just wondering how everyone does nest checks on Eastern Bluebirds? Everytime I go to open there box the male and female aggresively dive bomb me and...

Hi Steve, What a fabulous article. This was my first full year in trying to attract martins but was unsuccesful. There are many martins in my area and I live across the street from Nimisila Resevior where we have a large pre-migratory roost. I have one gourd rack up with 12 Super Gourds and one 8 co...

[quote="flyin-lowe"]Mitch Are you the one that had all of the visitors at your place towards the end of last season? I am sure that was you. I have been looking through my old emails trying to remember who it was. Yes I'm the one that had literally 1,000's visit every night only because I have a pre...

Hey Flyin-Lowe, Last year you sent me some photos of your place and how you removed the one tree. It seems to me that you have a perfect location. Have you had any spend the night or your first nesting pair? We have an abundance of housing and martins in our area so the birds can afford to be choosy...

Flying insects and temperature

About what temperature do insects become inactive? The country is going through a cold spell right now and the martins are already back. At what point does it become dangerous for them?

Hi David, Okay this may sound more complicated than it it was but it's really not. My writing skills will be the biggest challenge here. The nice thing about this set up is that you can set it and forget it. I may be able to explain better over the phone if your interested. If so just let me know an...

Thanks Louise for the response.

So I won't do any harm by playing the Dawnsong from 4:00am until 8:00pm? I'll make the adjustments today.

Dawnsong or Daytime Chatter?

Hi Everyone! This is my first full year in trying to start a colony. I have 12 Super Gourds up and ready with mud, pine straw, 6 decoys, mirrors and a power horn. Last fall I played the dawnsong during the evening hours and had several thousand martins circling the house every night for 3 or 4 weeks...

Hi there, Well I struggled with this same problem last year. After 3 months of trail and error I finally came up with a permanent solution. Here goes: I use a Powerhorn purchased from Radio Shack which can be used in all weather - rain or shine. I then hooked this powerhorn speaker up to my "outdoor...

Mark, Yes, you do make a very valid point. When I first bought the repeating sparrow trap I sat it in various locations for over a month before I ever caught one bird. No matter where I would put the trap I never seemed to catch a singel bird. I always wondered to myself what would keep other birds ...

West Texas.....?

Hi All,

I was just wondering why only the Eastern half of Texas gets PM'S? What's different about the West side of Texas?

Thanks,

Mitch

Hi Bill, I'm not a huge fan of handling the dead sparrows with my bare hands. I've found by the time I get home that generally 25% of the trapped birds are already dead from the pecking and stress inside the trap. I rigged up a hose that attaches to the muffler of my X-Mark 0-turn mower and put the ...

Pine straw vs. regular wheat straw....??

I was just wondering if I could get a few opinions off the forum with regard to using pine straw vs. regular old wheat straw? Is there much of a difference? I know my wife has a bale of straw sitting out for fall/Halloween decoration and figured I could use it as long as it doesn't get wet or moldy....

Thousands of martins visiting nightly

I was just curious if having literally thousands of martins visiting nightly (attracted by the dawnsong) and being near a premigratory roost area would offer any advantage to my site in starting a new colony next spring? It seems all the birds are sub adults. The birds seem to be very interested in ...

Purple martin roost..

I live across from Nimisila Lake in Akron Ohio. This area is premigratory roosting area. This is my first year in attempting to attract martins and I was unsuccessful this year. Last night I noticed a martin flying over the house and immediately went in the house to turn the dawn song on through the...

Housing location?

I'm new to the hobby. I live in the Portage Lakes area of Akron, Ohio. I have placed the house 40 feet away from the house and the nearest group of trees in 3 areas is 51-60 feet away. The problem I forsee is that a couple of these trees are 60-70 feet tall. I wasn't sure if I was wasting my time or...
