Re: Will all the new landlords please standup!

Mitch, I hope this is the consistent return year, your set up and location has none better, (looked at earlier posts-saw the address). You have room and water. I wonder if Handyman315 has a point, I mean what else can it be? large numbers of visitors...is there anyone else near you that hosts Marti...

Re: Will all the new landlords please standup!

Have followed your efforts (posts) . . . puzzling results. What do you think? Is the close proximity of the PM roost actually hampering your colony, i.e., harassing your birds? Did not try to search every past post or response; what do others say? Best of luck for 2018! Handyman, No I do not believ...

Re: Will all the new landlords please standup!

Well if history repeats itself I will be martinless again this coming season. It won't be long!!! I do believe with the small modifications, pole placement and removal of trees that were close to house this is the best setup I've ever had. I'm finally at peace with what I have as I can't really impr...

Re: Will all the new landlords please standup!

I had 50-75 birds siting on the gourd racks every night and every morning for the last couple of weeks. This is only because I'm about a mile away from a roost. Hopefully some will come back next year and break my string of bad luck!!

Re: Will all the new landlords please standup!

Well I finally had a nesting pair and they successfully fledged 4 young. I did have 3 additional SY males that hung around mid May through the first week of July. I wouldn't be a bit surprised if they don't come back next year as adults!! Moving the three gourd racks into one location was the trick ...

Re: 2017 Wannabe report

Do the males or females have higher nest site fidelity? I'm just thinking to myself if I have one SY pair and they do return next year as adults and since they do not mate for life they would most likely end stealing an adult from another colony.

Re: Predators...snakes?

Flyin-Lowe That is fantastic. I have one SY pair on 4 eggs and three fairly committed sy males that keep bringing in green leaves but I'm unable to see any females with them. I can't hardly imagine having 5 or more pair. I've had 5-6 birds around since May 17 and it's been very exciting for me as I'...

Re: Predators...snakes?

Flyin-Lowe, I see you had one pair in 2016, how many did you end up with this year? I currently have one pair of Sy's on 4 eggs but also have 3 persistent SY males that have yet to find mates. Hopefully my 4 eggs have a chance for a couple of fledglings. My luck the year following getting a nesting ...

Re: 2017 Wannabe report

Our club has a super colony near by and the latest the first egg has been laid is July 3rd or 4th. I can't remember exactly but I know it was the first part of July. Our roost typically peeks around August 15th and the numbers slowly go down and we end boat rides August 31st. I currently have one ne...

Re: 2017 Wannabe report

Marcus, Yes the roost is about 3/4 - 1 mile away as the crow flies. Our club does pontoon boat rides the whole month of August. Yes there are many banded birds and I'll literally have 500-1,000 birds circling my gourd racks in August about an hour prior to sunset. There has been constant activity he...

Re: 2017 Wannabe report

Marcus, I think this may be the year for me. I have one pair sitting on three eggs and 4 additional sy males here every morning and evening!! 6 birds seems like a pre-migratory roost to me!!! I'm thrilled w the activity this early in June. Normally my season seems to start around July 15 when the pr...

Re: 2017 Wannabe report

Flyin-lowe, Yes I'm thrilled. I do have an extra SY male that brought in a female yesterday and there was kinds of commotion. I would love to end up w 2 or 3 pair. I do have three trees about 30 feet tall that I'm removing because they are over grown. At least I'm having more confidence that my site...

Re: 2017 Wannabe report

Well I figured I would give an update. I currently have one pair of SY birds that laid there first egg today. I'm absolutely thrilled!!!  Wow what a roller coaster of emotions this year. I was just about to bring down all three gourd racks (not really) on May 30th in frustration that my...

Re: Ohio Update

Yes IF I have the ambition to put all three gourd racks back up next year I will most certainly not have any available bluebird or tree swallow nesting boxes available. This hobby can be exhausting at times. I have one male bringing in females the last three days but no takers. I must just have too ...

Re: Ohio Update

Yes I had the exact same problem. Next year I will not put up my gourd racks until the second week of May. I had martins visit multiple times only to be taken to the ground or dive bombed by tree swallows. I've moved three tree swallows gourds on Sheppard hooks directly between each gourd rack and t...

Re: 2017 Wannabe report

Thank you for the words of encouragement!!! Nothing to really report as of yet. Had one PM land on rack this morning but I had all the holes plugged in attempts to vacate a pair of tree swallows from the gourd rack over to a shepards hook which I believe worked. All 36 gourds are open now. Next 2 we...

Re: Chances of one pair returning

Dennis, I have hosted martins every other year I've tried to get them. So I'm batting a big fat zero on returning birds. I'm to the point now that I'd rather not even get one pair so my expectations will be in check for the following year. Both years I only had one pair. The first pair successfully ...

Re: Crows eating martins

I can take take starlings and sparrows out to 40 yards with my .22 caliber PCP Benjamin marauder air rifle 9 out of 10 shots if it is not super windy. The gun also has a shrouded barrel and is very quiet to shoot.
