Re: Hopefully my season is starting.

Well I went from one lone ASY male that arrived on April 28th to two pair both ASY males with SY females in approximately one week. Tomorrow it will be three weeks since my founding male returned and I have finally turned off the Dawnsong as I've seen only one or two SY males in the last three weeks...

Re: No Adult Martins Again!!

Glad things are picking up for you Mitch. We have been on a similar track the last several years, a lone pair here and there followed by a blank the next year. I have 5 ASY pair nest building right now and another pair that I think will stay. Plus I spotted what I though was an SY male I have been ...

Re: House Sparrows Cohabitating?

Hello I have a Gourd rack set up with 12 Troyer gourds. My question is can HB cohabitate with Martins? 3 of my 12 gourds are occupied with HB and now all 3 HB pairs have laid eggs. My Martins who nest in the other 9 gourds do not seem to mind the HS's. Should I just leave the 3 house sparrows gourd...

Re: No Adult Martins Again!!

Hi Mitch, have been following your threads for a long time ,congratulations I know just how happy you are. Are you still living in there very nice place with that large pond behind the house ? I was just curious or have you moved to a different location? Ed. Ed, I'm still in the same place. I have ...

Re: Hopefully my season is starting.

Flyin-Lowe, Sounds good! I had a lone ASY male show up April 28 and within 1 week (the following Saturday) I have 3 ASY males and 2 SY and 1 ASY females which appear to be mates now. One week can make a huge difference!! I've only seen 1 SY-male and he was here and gone and haven't seen him since. I...

Re: No Adult Martins Again!!

Just an update guys!

Went home today to find 2 ASY males, 2 SY females and an SY male at my site. To have 5 martins chirping and carrying on at once was an absolute thrill for me not to mention having 2 dark purple adult birds!!!! Hopefully this is the year I break my pattern!!

Re: No Adult Martins Again!!

Let's hope so!!

I had two ASY males at the site this morning. My founder spent the night last night. It is just amazing he went straight to the same gourd he was in last year!!

Re: No Adult Martins Again!!

Now you’re talking, Mitch. Crossing fingers and toes for you. Tor Wow Tor going from 4 pair to 32 pair in one year is huge!!! I’d be over-whelmed with 5 or 6 pair. My male went into his gourd that he fledged 4 young out of last year about 8:15 this evening. This will be the first time I’ve ever had...

Re: No Adult Martins Again!!

Sharon, You were 100% correct when you said tomorrow. I posted this thread on Friday evening.... Saturday at noon there sits a beautiful ASY male on the porch that he fledged young out of last year!!!!! I was thrilled to say the least!! He was back again today sitting on the same gourd rack. This is...

Re: No Adult Martins Again!!

Mitch: Migration for many is running behind this year. Many may not have survived it, due to the bad weather. The latest I've had ASY Males arrive is May 12th here in central PA. Hang in there. Toy in PA Thanks Toy! If it is going to happen, I suspect it will happen next week as the weather is goin...

No Adult Martins Again!!

Well this will be the third year I’ve hosted a pair of SY nesting Martins the previous year and not have any return as adults. Actually if history repeats itself this will be my year off again. So with the adult migration winding down for Northeast Ohio I’ll need to fire up the Dawnsong AGAIN and pu...

Re: Still just one pair!

Well this appears to be my year off again.... lol. I'm no longer going to sweat it one way or the other. If it happens it happens. I haven't seen hide or hair of a martin this year. The three SY males that hung out last year or the pair that fledged 4 haven't returned either. I typically, (past six ...

Re: Mentor program

I completed the mentor form as well but nothing shows on the map either. I tried clicking on the map to see available mentors or mentees in my area but nothing shows up.... I'm not sure how someone would even find my information if they had questions or needed advice...? Can anyone assist with how t...

Re: Will all the new landlords please standup!

Had my first and only pair at my home (asy male/female) two seasons ago and they fledged 5 young. The male made it back this past spring but not the female. The male hung around strong and fought through some VERY nasty spring weather for a good month. We had martin killing weather in Iowa last spr...

Pine Straw

I realize the advantages of pine straw over wheat straw. I agree they do not hold the moisture and dry out much quicker. The pine straw I've been using is like hypodermic needles!! This stuff is hard and is hard on my hands!!! Is there any softer pine needles in use? Any recommendations on different...

Re: Will all the new landlords please standup!

Yes I'm actually in a martin rich area. Our area which is known as the Portage Lakes was recently named the Purple Martin Capital of Ohio. I have probably 40 colonies within a 5 mile radius with one being a super colony with over 100 cavities. I truly feel this year will be my year and I'll be okay...
