I love the stories of people remembering their grandparents had martins so when they got older, they had to have them too. I would love to say that is how I became interested..........................but, it is not! :) Nearly twenty years ago when I married, my husband and I were re-doing our house....

Hi Cheryl, I had a nestling with this condition this year also. I noticed it before any of the nestlings in that nest had opened their eyes. I found the Update article that John referenced and read about the condition there. There was not a lot of information about it on the internet so I was glad t...

I had a situation here this year where I fed a couple babies and then placed them in an appropriate nest. All worked out well and one fledged with a family and the other is about too. It sure does pay to pay attention !! You did a good job for noticing that with all the birds you have. My kids were ...

I have all the books mentioned here. Chris Slabaugh's book is a good one to have and read. J.L. Wade's book was one I read because I wanted to read everything , but it is mostly a history on the Trio company and how it was started (still interesting and I do not regret reading it). I have to agree w...

I agree that Red-tailed Hawks are not a bad thing to have flying in your colony airspace. Most of the time here, they are high and the martins ignore them. IF they get too low, they will get mobbed. I am happy to have them if they do a good job of keeping the Cooper's Hawks away. Those are the ones ...

Thanks, Bob. You be correct! The PMCA has done tremendous work for the betterment of the Purple Martin. Just where would we be had they never organized? We should all count our blessings and never say anything that we wouldn't be willing to say face to face! There are a lot of wonderful marti...

Sharon, thanks for sharing your story. How nice that you have that many pairs this year. I remember reading of your snake experience. So happy that you have bounced back in a *big and wonderful* way!! It is cause for celebrating! As of today...........I have 13 pair, another 1st egg in a nest...

jwertz, I haven't tackled posting photos here yet. Anything in particular you would like to know? I have a T-14, AAA-16 with natural gourds with tunneled entries and a modified Trio Grandpa. I always thought my site was open enough, but when you aren't getting them you start to wonder. Well, as of t...

Candace, if you have more than one gourd, then by all means, put one or more under the other house. It sure can't hurt anything. It is very frustrating to have a male make it look so easy, and have the female not land. Been there done that! :???: She really is the ticket as far as I am concerned. I ...

Thanks, Candace and Karrie--you two keep looking up. Your time will come. Some just have to wait a bit so it is all the more nice when you do get them. My best to you and I hope it happens THIS year!! :)

Hi Candace.................it is not too late for you. I understand exactly what you are going through. I have at least 5 new birds here today and you are not too far from me. I would still hold out hope at least until the end of June. That was always the point in which I doubted it was going to hap...

Success and a Huge Thank You to the PMCA!!

Ahhhh, the success of finally getting martins after trying for 4 years is sweeeeeet!! I first put up a house in 2003, totally expecting to get martins that year.................NOT! Too cruel to go another 3 years without them.......I did. But now, in 2007, I can finally say that I am a martin landl...
