Opening gourds

We have opened all of ours couple days ago. If an entrance is closed and a martin comes in, most will just sit on porch and wait for us to open the entrance. Just want them to have shelter in case it is cold, sleeting or raining. Saw the very thing happen few days ago. Freezing cold and the martin k...

Colony update 3/7

We have 14 martins here! 3 females and rest are males. The majority are eating from feeding tray, along with the BB and mocking birds, and any other small yard birds that go to the tray. Sun is shinning very pretty this morning. High supposed to 55 and sunny all day. No wind!! They should go out and...

Update

Thanks for the update Steve! Sorry you and Bob lost some martins. It hurts:( But no matter what you do, all will just not eat, or they won't at out colony. It is always nice to now what is going on at other colonies and how many martins are coming in. Maybe all the really bad prolonged weather is ov...

Bluebird house

My suggestion is put up a blue bird house near your martin colony like itroyer said about 100 to 120 feet if you can. If your martin colony was already well established you probably could place it a little closer. We have a large martin colony, and have a BB house 15 feet from one of our satellite d...

Warming up

Nice looking fellow! Even though it was cold yesterday, the sun was so nice. No wind yesterday here! That was nice for the martins. Bet all of us here in the south will start seeing more martins starting today, if the temp goes to 55 degrees as forecasted for here. Bulldog1, they will be coming home...

Martins

William,
Yes we have been feeding for several years. 3 ate from tray this afternoon. Hoping the rest will join in soon. We are excited they are here but also worried about their survival during the next few days.

WOW!

8 martins here this morning. Worried for their safety but maybe they can make it through the very cold upcoming nights and days. Hope they will take food. They moved quick to get here. Only 2 Sunday afternoon.

Cold martins

Both martins are still here. One eats from feeding tray and catching crickets. The other still not eating. Both are staying in different gourds on different racks. The cold weather coming isn't good at all. I am seeing temps forecasted 19 degrees Wed night and 10 degrees Thursday night. Think the 9 ...

Feeding martins

Two Gourds, You may have to toss many crickets before they decide to start eating. Yes some crickets will go to waste but you have to work with them when they are hungry and in desperate need of food. If you have a nearby Petsmart or similar store, you can purchase crickets there and order crickets ...

Sunday morning surprise!

Two ASY male martins here early this morning! One ate flipped crickets and ate from the feeding tray. The other did not. Maybe he will catch on quickly. Rainey days and more cold temps in the upcoming days. And one day supposed to be 70 degrees! Hoping for warm days soon. Also on a sad note, the fir...

Enjoyed the video! Makes me think of spring even though everything is covered in snow here in north Mississippi.

Owls

I agree with Kathy. Owls get used to whatever you use trying to deter them. An active martin colony equals food to the owls. We have tried a radio, scarecrows. They wait and watch from a distance. Sometimes you have to look for the evidence of their success. Occasionally a feather in or around the c...

Martins

We checked the gourd about 8:20 am, no martins. Checked gourd this afternoon at 4:45, no martins in gourd. Have looked out the door and windows many many times today. No martins seen. Very unlikely they will survive if they don't stay here and eat. Not much I can do to control where they go or stay....

Bulldog,
Maybe your martin is safe and will return soon. We haven't seen ours today or tonight either. Maybe they are all together.

Feeding martins

Yes they have ate the crickets when we flip them up in the air. They ate good Wednesday afternoon. Only ate 1 cricket each Thursday morning. Didn't come out of gourd Thursday afternoon or today. We didn't even think they were in the gourd till Chris put the hand warmer in tonight. They didn't even c...

Cold martins

If they were eating or had been eating the last couple days I wouldn't be as concerned. Just glad they are still alive.
