Re: Bed & Breakfast Distance/Height from PM House

There is no set distance. Just make it easily seen and high enough off the ground from predators. My feeding tray is about 20 feet from my colony.

Re: Cardboard nest boxes

Hi Vmorg,
I would not use cardboard boxes for the reasons mentioned previously. But, they do sell PVC / plastic inexpensive nesting boxes online that meet the needs for martins.

Re: Feeding baby’s

Hi Poidog, There reason the adults are not taking to supplement feeding is a matter of need and timing. Martins usually do not go after supplement food until they feel hunger. At this time, they simply are not in need of supplement food. The parents are busy feeding their babies now and they are fin...

Re: Has this baby been wounded? UPDATE 7-1-20

Hi Diane,
I feel so much better knowing that this baby has a great chance of weathering the storm. It looks much better now that you have taken those steps to help him heal. A feel good thread.

Re: Has this baby been wounded?

Hi Diane, I'm by no means an avian rehabilitator nor vet, so this is just my thoughts. I wouldn't want to harm the baby any more than its current condition. So, I think that is would be ok to simply use a little mild soap like dawn with some water and lightly rub the rear. Then, clean it off with cl...

Re: Nest Changes ?? Or Not ??

Hi Bill, As mentioned by Ed, if there are no bird mites there is no reason to do a nest change. Do keep in mind that you should not do nest checks after the babies have reached 20 days of age; they may try to fledge too early if you do checks after 20 days of age. I suggest continuing to do weekly c...

Re: Wait of 18 years is finally over

I wanted to be the first to congratulate you. That is a long wait and it finally came true. I hope that they all fldge and a few make it back to your newly started colony. I have been praying for you all these years to get some martins. Nice picture too.

Re: First ever hatchling!

Congrats flmike. Just keep in mid to NOT do nest checks on babies 20 days or older, as they may jump / try to fledge too early. It is good to do checks up to around the 20 day mark.

Re: Help! Help! Babies gone. Just one left.

You have had a rough road in the journey to try to establish a colony. It may be very difficult to watch that gourd all day long to try to keep out the SY male.

Reminder to watch for capped eggs on nest checks

Hey everyone, I realize that most landlords are already aware of keeping an eye out for capped eggs during weekly nest checks. For those that are new to being a martin landlord, a capped egg is an egg that has a half egg shell covering half of an egg. When the babies hatch, there is a small chance t...

Re: Something has been going on in one of my rooms....

Hi T bird. Those are some great pics. Just remeber to not do nest checks when the babies are 20 days old or older. After 20 days of age, you run the risk of the babies trying to fledge too early and it is very hard to get them to stay in a cavity once they have jumped out. Take a look on the PMCA we...

i Rob,
You have done a wonderful job this year. I would say that you could just wait until the end of the season after the martins are gone before doing any more changes.

i Diane,
dsonyay is right on the two possibilities. Sadly, this occurs occasionally and is a cruel aspect of nature. I wish I could give you more good news. Don't let this discourage you in the years ahead.

Re: Martin banding

Hi Diane, Here is one of our bird banders in our state. Licensed bird bander Bob Van Ersvelde, a Grinnell resident who has over 23 years of experience. Hopefully this will help. Keep in mind that conditions must be met in order for birds to be banded. It is my way of saying that they just don't do i...

Re: Planning now for 2021

Hi Birdiegirl, It looks to be very encouraging with the visitors this year. Any new first year hatchlings within the area may see your set up when they are about to take off for their migration south. So, it is a good idea to keep the entrances open until all martins have migrated south from your re...

Re: Trio pioneer house door

Hi Rob, It looks great. My only concern would be with the trio metal door opening, I would cut out the old small opening to match it with the same size of the tunnel. I would be afraid that the martin may get stuck within the tunnel due to the small turn around space if he is battling with another y...

Re: One egg disappeared

Hi Diane,
I doubt the single egg was removed by a visiting martin. The egg may have been a dud egg, infertile and SY young pair will sometimes remove the infertile egg themselves. If the SY pair are still hanging around, it is a good sign that things are normal.
