Re: THOUGHTS ABOUT ROOSTS & FALL MIGRATION==TX

ATTENTION Tdart: I know this is about migration and roosts, but I wanted to interject and answer the earlier post. " Last week I put up my first purple Martin house and am new "enthusiast". Should I open the doors to the house so that purple Martins migrating south take note of the possibilities for...

Re: Gourd Limit for 2" Square Aluminum Pole

Depending on nearby tree coverage and structure to block the high winds are something to take into consideration. I feel the increased weight and hieght are just a disaster waiting to happen. When in doubt always go verboard on beefing up the whole set up.

Re: Ideas wanted for housing portable base

Hi bootjack farm, Ray is 100% correct about guy wires as a route for predators. A bag of quickcret is inexpensive and a hole is easy to dig. I understand your wish is for it to be portable and the idea is well intentioned, but I worry about high winds. What you are doing for a fundraiser is very hon...

I would say daveh and flyin low may have the answer in that of nightly owl raids. An owl if successful will continue to come back every night for a snack.

Larry and Judy, Which ever decision you make, try not to beat yourself up too bad. It is a part of life that people have to struggle with and I feel for you. I fret the day of my passing and what will happen to my purple babies. If you decide to take a little backseat to the hobby, you may wish to c...

Re: The Perch for Round Poles (The l).

I had a similar experience when I just started out in the purple martin hobby. So, in sum I had my cousin Mike Oliver weld a 24 steel circular gourd rack with a sqaure hub that rode up and down on a 4 inch heavy duty square pole that was cemented witha full cubic yard of cement. I have had over 90 m...

Re: T-14 Contruction Questions

Garry, You did a great job on constructing the house. White-out, I found my round vents at Lowe's. They are 2 inch silver aluminum soffit vents. Use a 2 inch hole saw, dab some lexel or good quality clear exterior silicone caulking around the inside lip of the soffit vent and insert snuggly into the...

Re: PM’s still in the area

This season has seen later than normal migration and also visitors from further north. In addition, the sound you are hearing may not be that of a purple martin. It is an easy mistake to misidentify by sound alone. So, in a nut shell no need to worry. I hope this settles your mind and worries.

Re: How to take down an old pole and house for repair

Hi David, Thank you for the history of the martin house and pole, I enjoyed. The tilt down style of martin poles are highly discouraged as they are difficult to lower and do nest checks each week and can be a bear with such a set up. It is also discouraged due to the fact that the eggs simply spill ...

Re: How to take down an old pole and house for repair

Hi dwsample, Thank you for providing the pics as it helps us determine the style of the pole set up. It appears to be an out of date tilt down pole. I would first remove the houses from the horizontal poles, most likely bolted into the metal houses floors. Then, you can either hacksaw off the bolt /...

Re: T-14 Contruction Questions

Randy Hi Randy, Use the Troyer tunnel with the mounting plate included. In doing so, you simply screw in the four corners of the plate to the T 14 and have a hole that matches the tunnel from the front of the T14 compartments. I put hinges on the wooden T 14 doors and then the tunnel simply swings o...

Hi Birdgirlnerd, Welcome to the world of purple martins. My suggestion is to read as much info as you can under the quick links section of this website as knowledge is power in the martin hobby.. Best of luck my friend. Sometimes it can take years before a new martin landlord gets their first pair, ...

Re: Another question on housing

Hi Hanah, Bless you for planning on providing a future home to martins. Many people that are just starting out try to keep their cost of housing low until after they actually get martins and then spend more money as they go forth. If you plan on the cedar T14 or use pine with good coats of white pai...

Wait a week or more after your last seen martin before cleaning starts

I just wanted to remind everyone that just because you don;t see martins around your colony near the end of the season doesn't mean the martins aren't slipping intp their nest quickly as dusk. The parents train their babies to forage for insect prior to heading south for the winter; which is about 1...

Hi barbiejo,
Instead of wire, you may want to consider troyer hoizontal gourd mounting arms sold online. They attach to some square gourd racks.

Hi hanaho01, Thank you for providing an ariel view of your location as it helps greatly in understanding where to put up a possible martin house. I think your intended location for a house is ideal and should be tried. Since there were martins in your location in past years, it shows that martins ar...
