Good or bad to go supercolony?

I currently have 42 compartments with a variety of housing . I will inherit 42 more next season pushing available housing to 84 closing in on a possible supercolony in the future. I didn't plan on expanding next year but circumstances dictate I will. Steve Kroenke had a great post on supercolonies; ...

Don Dearborn passed away. Long time martin landlord & fr

Don Dearborn passed away recently. If you knew Don and would like to send a sympathy card in the mail, please email me for his address. Don touched many martin enthusiasts throughout his life and left a legacy in the world of martining. He was a good friend and he was the soul who taught me everythi...

Concerns about dock placement.

I live on a small lake in Iowa. I have a large colony and my houses and gourds are located about 35 feet from the waters edge. My concern is this. If the openings are pointed out toward the lake and a fledgling doesn't get enough height on his maiden voyage they sometime may land in the water. Even ...

Excellent advice.

It just kills me when I know one of my martins fell pray. I guess I feel for every lost martin. It's a hard business to be in when your soft hearted like me. In the end I know I'm doing much more good for the species by offering housing. It is suprising how easily the hawk is discouraged when a pers...

Fictional short story: The Perfect Year.

There were no days with extreme cold or humid heat. Not a single fight for cavity ownership; nor a squabble could be heard. The skies were clear and full of fat juicy dragonflies just waiting to be snapped up. The martins arrived at the same time each evening to chatter and discuss their day. Every ...

Hawk attack.

This is my first year where I have lost a martin due to hawk attack. I have noticed that martins are fairly effective at escape once the hawk is seen by the colony. It is usually the younger new fledglings that get caught. If you can it is a good idea to spend some time outside when you think the ha...

Andy Troyer is very concerned about the well being of martins. I also spoke with him today and after a insightful conversation I now understand how dedicated he is to his passion.

Troyer Horizontal Gourd update and insight.

I had the pleasure of speaking with Andy Troyer concerning my unusually high number of wing entrapments. Troyer gourds have been a main stay for years and continue to produce quality products. With literally thousands of Troyer customers, Andy and his team spend a great deal of time ensuring the bes...

Makes me sick to my stomach.

Here in Iowa I think we may have dodged the bullet. I have done nest checks and had to change out the old nesting material for fresh white pine needles due to mites in a few cavities. So far no deaths from weather. Dealing with strange wing entrapments this year. Also, one hawk attack that may have ...

My mistake, you are correct. Here is part of the instructions found under FAQ on this website PMCA. I had the check dates confused since it mentioned day 10 and 20 to do checks. Sorry for the typo. Landlords need to exercise caution when conducting nest checks on martin housing containing older nest...

Sounds like some tunnels are improperly constructed straight from the companies producing them. I guess time will tell with new designs.

So far your comments have all been very helpful. I had so many entrapment on my horizontal gourd that I removed the inner plastic entrance inside the tunnel. It slowed down the entrapment rate. I will take a look at emil's wing entrapment web page. Thanks so much.

Good idea, but remember to only do nest check up until

Good to remove the egg, but remember to only do nest check and handle babies for nest replacement up until the babies are 10 days old. Otherwise you risk too early fledging.

Finding dead babies is heartrenching

Being a landlord takes a certain person and you my friend did the best you could under the circumstances. It is so hard when a colony does bad. I feel for you.

Tunnels and wing entrapment.

This is my first year of having gourds with tunnels and I can honestly say never again. I have had 14 wing entrapments this year all in the gourds with tunnels. Three deaths and eight had to be physically removed by hand. The other three escaped on their own after much effort. I have been a landlord...

No entrapments since removal of inner hole.

Since I first posted this thread and after removing the inner hole; I have not had a single martin get trapped. I do believe the solution is in cutting out the inner hole and widening the entrance on each side. Be sure to round the top edges of the outer entrance downward, no sharp corners.

I chatted with Troyer. New info.

By all means Troyer makes top notch quality gourds. The company is a class act and I plan to continue buying the THG with tunnels. After cutting out the inner hole as shown above in Tim's picture and widening the outer entrance and making sure the edges are smoothed and slightly rounded I have not h...

Please read this.

I'm panicing because it is not a rare event. Three days in a row with three stuck martins means there is something wrong. If you scroll up to Cathy F response you will see a picture of the entrance along with it's inner hole. You need to cut out all of the inner hole to match the diameter of the tun...

Cut out inside hole of THG and widen entrance.

I just cut out the inner hole today. So far no problems with stuck martins. I don't have a camera to post a picture of my alterations. For the last three days in a row I had a martin get stuck in the entrance between the inner hole and outer entrance hole. They got stuck in a tight way, very difficu...
