Re: 7 adult martins at ohio wannabee location

You never know, someone near by could have lost their housing to a storm, had predator issues, or something else. I moved away from my first colony and the people who bought my house didn't want the housing up so I took it with me, so the following spring there were 30 pair of ASY's looking for a ne...

Re: Nest pics

Looking good. I noticed nest building really picked up this weekend at my place. SY's should be arriving in the next few weeks and that will get really get things going. I haven't lowered my housing to see how many nests are being built but I think I have 12-15 pair here right now. I'm hoping to get...

Re: They were here...

If the martins are hanging out and coming and going I would stop playing the dawn song. It is a great attractant but real martins will do a better job at going out and attracting more martins. Plus some martins can get confused and or annoyed by it. At my old house I had my player sitting under the ...

Re: Frustrated PM Landlord Looking for Tenants

A 2 D picture is sometimes hard to get a good feel for the layout. It seems like the house is maybe not in the most open spot of the yard. Further from the trees would be better, even if it means being a little further from your house. If you can do a screen grab from google earth of your property f...

Re: Tree swallows and Martins?

Also I am not sure if there are any limitations but more likely than not if they are martins or tree swallows you can usually walk very close to them and get a picture, like within a couple feet of the pole. Starlings and other birds not so much.

Re: Tree swallows and Martins?

Any chance you could snap some pictures of the birds you are seeing and post them.? A couple things come to mind to me. If the birds you had there last year were indeed martins and they returned this year a small change to the house like railings would not cause them to leave. One time I have had tw...

Re: Invader in the sky

I have a family member that will bring a drone to my place from time to time. The martins absolutely do not like it. It's funny, in nature they typically know what is a danger and what is not. Certain hawks go by and they pay no attention to them, others go by and the get out of town quick. They don...

JQ, that can depend on how big your baffle is. When it comes to snakes though the netting is always a good idea.

Re: Storm Coming

Trust me you want to lower the tri tel poles anytime there is high winds forecasted. I have a tri tel pole with nothing on it but a small SK perch station and it has bent in the wind with nothing but the pole itself to catch the wind. I can't imagine what it would have done with a house or gourds on...

Re: Unpaired ASY Males

I've never had unpaired ASY males. I would assume that SY females would be happy to snatch them up. I am not sure though how far along the SY migration is in your area. The ones in my area haven't even started arriving yet.

It might help too if you can go to google earth and get a screenshot of your property and the surrounding area from overhead. It is easier to get a feel for the lay of the land....

Re: First time landlord

You'll notice too that as the season goes on they will spend more time around the housing, nest building etc. In the beginning it is nerve racking every time they leave for long periods of time that they have left for good. I remember my very first year that I was not satisfied until I saw my first ...

Re: First time landlord

An ASY male is like an instant colony often times. As you have seen he will draw in others. My first year with a colony I had a lone ASY male return (he was SY the year before and never found a mate) and he attracted 4 additional SY pair. With the ASY pair and the extra SY's you have you are set for...

Re: New Landlord-where do they go?

I am one who leaves the decoys up. You have martins which will attract the attention of the hawks regardless of decoys. The hawks will often times go for the "martin" that is not paying attention or that is the slowest to take off, which is typically the decoy...... A decoy will not attract hawks to...

Re: Brand new member and had a martin today.

Welcome from a fellow Hoosier. Many people (my self included) initially mistake tree swallows for martins the firs time. If you didn't see any white then it wasn't a tree swallow. They have a snow white breast that you will see. I always tell people the best thing to do is watch or listen to videos ...

Re: SY male.. very fiesty!

I have seen lots of color variations of SY males over the years. So with no purple at all and others that look like they have some weird disease with random splotches all over them. It's just a good sign when you see them start moving in.

Re: Large Influx Of SY Purple Martins Arrived

Sounds like things are good down your way Steve. First week I had arrivals I had 3 males stay all week. The following week I picked up 7 or 8 more, a mix of males and females. This past week I haven't noticed any increase but temps have been below freezing in the morning and only into the mid 40's a...

Re: Video.. nest building

I haven't thought about trying gourds (yet). I have so much trouble with Starlings and Hosp with the grain elevators around, I don't think I can control them with the gourds that would be pointing away from my back door. I have S&K for all my housing, and I put them up so I am looking at the side o...
