Re: Martins

The SY's are just starting to arrive in Indiana. If you have some ASY's already nesting I would not be a bit surprised if you don't end up with several more pair. The ASY's will draw them in. How many cavities do you have total? I would guess within the next 3-4 weeks you will see in increase over t...

Re: What's the best hole to use

I would speculate that as many or more martins fledge from housing with SREH than do from round holes, or it's probably close. Many colonies are started with all SREH, I am one that thinks if everything else at your site is acceptable, they wont turn down your location solely because of SREH. Even a...

Re: What's the best hole to use

Since I have had martins I have used either crescents or Conley II entrances. I have had great success with both. Only once have I ever had a starling breach. On my T14 I have the plastic crescent plates screwed onto the front door of the house. The Conley II are what come on the Troyer gourds I use...

Re: New predator guard

I had always heard the top of the guard needs to be at least 4 foot off the ground. That's why I make these a little over 4 foot tall some there is 48 inches between the latches. I think the top height is so a big snake can't reach its head to the top from the ground. If you have a guard that a rat ...

Re: New predator guard

I let the paint dry and put the guard on today. I had to end up putting the flared/flanged end of the pipe up top. At first I had the flanged side down and when I went to clamp it it was about 1/4 of an inch shy of going around the winch and the metal box that the winch is bolted to that is also bol...

Re: Coastal Arrivals - Delaware

It might just be your particular part of the state. Looking back to 2015 Delawares arrivals are right in line with Maryland and West VA. March 15-20th is the normal reported arrival time for all three states.

Re: Looking for help to attract PM in Southen Maryland

Some pictures further out showing the rest of the yard or an overhead view from google earth would still help. What are the closest trees to the houses that are at the same height or higher than the housing?

Re: how high should snake guards be?

I would guess far more martins are and will be killed by snakes then martins that die from getting tangled in the netting.

Re: Dead chicks and wondering why??

Any chance the nest got wet? A wet nest can drain the body heat quickly from a baby martin. Just a guess.....

Re: Looking for help to attract PM in Southen Maryland

The best place to start would be to try to post some pictures of your housing and yard, including a Google earth overhead image. To post pictures on this forum they have to be reduced quite a bit. The easiest way I have found is to right click on the picture and hit "open with" and open the picture ...

Re: how high should snake guards be?

Im sure someone can find it quicker then me but years ago there was a picture posted on here from the internet showing a snake on the ground "reaching" up pas the top of a predator guard, it was impressive to see what they can actually do.

New predator guard

I needed a predator guard for the T14 I put up last year. I made one very similar to this approximately 15 years ago and haven't had a breach. I have found paw prints on it from raccoons trying to get up it. Even though I have never had an issue I am going to add some netting above it I think. This ...

Re: How many times?

I've been in your shoes. I bet you are thinking "if I only get a few pair then I won't constantly be wandering and worrying about getting them". Then once you get a few you find yourself counting all of them every time you look out the window. Then you get more and you are on a constant lookout for ...

Re: Outdoor Amazon Speaker

I can't comment on that particular speaker. When I was playing the dawnsong I went to WalMart and purchased a cheap CD player alarm clock. At my old house I had it sitting in a trash bag on a milk crate up against my pole barn. They would last three years or so that way until the weather would final...

Re: New Member and New PM Follower

At my old colony I never had martins follow the mower, it was always barn swallows and sometimes tree swallows. My current colony I will have martins, barn swallows and tree swallows buzzing around. To help with your ID the tree swallows have a snow white breast and are smaller then martins. The bar...

Re: Subadult reports

I agree, throughout the years the SY reporting numbers are always a lot lower. I think people get excited early in the year when they first see a martin and then report it. I know a lot of people starting new colonies always want to track the SY migration but not as many people participate in report...

Re: Frustrated PM Landlord Looking for Tenants

Is it more open in the front of the house? It's hard to tell, if not I would move it to the left (west?) to get away. I have seen in person colonies in my area that have trees touching the martin housing. That typically happens when a colony is started and trees encroach over time. My belief is that...
