J Gragg, The guy I am getting this hemlock from told me two features to the wood are that bugs avoid it and it wont rot. He showed me a stack of about for boards that were in the weeds in an old barn lot behind a small shed. The top board looked weathered and he removed it and the other boards looke...

I have a state park across the street from my house and there is a line of pine trees a mile long. I am not sure what species but they are about 3-5 inches long and pliable. This area is not mowed sprayed or treated. I go over there and the needles are several inches deep. I probably have enough to ...

Another visitor passing through

I had no takers at my site this year but a few visitors. I hadn't seen anything for a long time until last night I was out doing some yard work and there was a PM circling close to my house for a few minutes. At first I didn't pay much attention because of the large number of barnies that have been ...

Good to see. I know around here we have large roosts of starlings and people hate it because of the mess. I could see people not educated in birds no wanting a roost b/c of the noise and droppings. Im glad that the local business seem to enjoy it or it could be bad for the PM's

Well if you've read my other post then you see I have found some lumber at a great price. It is hemlock, I was not familiar with it but have done some research and think I am going to go with it. #1 reason I can get enough to do the house for about $50.00. I also have a friend who owns a large contr...

Need advice from some lumber pros!

If you read my other post I am planning to build T-14. I was pricing cedar the other day when a buddy asked if you "had" to use cedar. I told him the benefits and he told me he had some Hemlock boards he bought to finish the inside of a barn with. He said it is light weight but holds up well to the ...

Shepherd's hooks (at least the ones I have) are not easy at all to dislodge. How in the heck could a raccoon do that? I am a fairly strong small woman and it takes a substantial amount of pulling and maneuvering to pull it up. Doesn't make sense to me. Is it possible that you have cantankerous kids...

Initially I was going to add a gourd rack to my S&K house but after this summer and a lot of driving 90% of the PM colonies I have seen within 20-30 miles of me have been housing. I have found 1 colony that is all gourds. Of the housing about 50-50 split between some type of aluminium and the T 14. ...

One more questions for you guys. On my plans it says to buy 3/4x12 inch boards. Most of you know that if you buy a 1"x12" it is actually a 3/4" inch board. Are you supposed to buy 1x12's which are actually 3/4 or do you buy 3/4 which are smaller then 3/4? I know it seems petty but I am at work today...

About how much cheaper is it to build this house then to buy one.
How much do you have invested in yours, just the house not the pole.

Well whatever it was struck again last night so I am going to set a live trap and see if I have any luck. If not I will climb into the snipers nest and see what happens.

Attack on my hummingbird feeder.

Yesterday morning when I got up the shepards hook holding my feeder was pulled out of the ground and drug a few feet. The petals where dismantled also. We are having very dry weather this year. Would a racoon or some other animal do this trying to get the nector? I make my own sugar water so it is c...

Sounds like the SBM needs some more R&D before it is at its best. I might try to find a small radio with a timer feature. The small alarm clock I had was great because I could set two different alarms times and it would go off and play. I kept it outside for two summers now just in a trash bag along...

Songbird Magnet Dawn Song

I have seen some of the digital devices that play dawnsong and daytime chatter. Last year I was using an alarm clock CD player but I don't think it was loud enough. By the time I bought a radio and cord and an external speaker the cost would be a lot higher then these all in one digital units. Anyon...

T-14 design plans

Where is the best place to get plans or blueprints for a T-14. I had used S&K house at my house and said I was going to stick with it until I established some PM's to see if I could attract them. I have had some visitors but none have stayed so I am thinking about starting a T 14 now and just workin...

I was leary of the traps but this time of year when the TS are not here and I have no PM's I have more luck with glue traps then anything. I have been cutting the big ones into strips so it is about 2 inches by four inches and I put it on the porch area of my S&K house. When ever I get a HOSP I cant...

Google Earth

I tried to get a link but could not get it to work. I have posted some picks and tried to explain my location but this might be the best thing to do. If you go to Google earth and in the search box type in or cut and paste in these coordinates it will get you over my place. 40 01' 58.20"N 85 17'04.4...
