Re: Got Him! Thankful .22

I shoot a lot of HOSP around my martins with a 20 gauge shot gun. Early in the season they will scatter and soon return. Now, often times they won't even fly off, except occasionally some will follow the the HOSP to the ground mobbing it.

Re: Babies being attacked

I too have mocking birds on my property and have never seen them land on a porch of my martin housing. I do see them land on top or the perches but never shown interest in going in a cavity. I would suspect an SY over a mocker but never say never.

Re: Nest check bonanza and approach to Cowbird egg?

I see a lot of cowbirds around my place but have never seen one land on my martin housing and have never seen one enter a martin cavity. I don't recall ever reading about it on here. Do you have SREH? I assumed they would be able to navigate those.

Re: Weather

Most likely they won’t take eggs from a platform if they never eaten them before. If I were you I would go to a pet store and buy 100 crickets or so. Shouldn’t cost much at all. I would put the bag of them in the freezer for a coupe hours which will slow them down to no movement if it doesn’t kill t...

Re: Weather

kbroder What is your main cause of concern the last three days? Are your temps cold or is it due to rain? I am straight west of you near the IN/OH border. We did have quite a bit of rain the last couple days but there were always several hour breaks for us and with temps in the mid to high 50's, low...

Lumber prices

A friend of mine asked me to build a T 14. Last year when I built mine the total for the lumber before tax was 202.21. Tonight I bought the same lumber from the troyer plans and the cost was right at 360.00. The total bill came to 396.00 but 30 of that was a box of screws and 8 hinges. Both are ceda...

Re: Homemade pred guards for SK Tri-pole

I have a Tri tel pole that I use for perching station. I have one of the predator guards for it because it helps hold a feeding tray thabthe also make. I know it's not needed on a pole only for perching but I have it up on the second section so it's probably 8 feet or more off the ground. I started ...

Re: Homemade pred guards for SK Tri-pole

Nice work, looks well done. The only thing you might check (I can't remember) is how high up the bottom pin of the tri tel pole is. You want to make sure the top of the guard is at least 4 foot off the ground. If it is lower then that some animals can bypass the. I have seen pictures of larger black...

Re: New Colony question

With an ASY pair I would be surprised if they don't attract a few pair of SY's this season. With each the warm up in the Midwest this week the SY's should be showing up in big numbers going forward.

Re: SY Has Arrived & TS Wars

If the martin is still sticking around your place you can turn off the dawn song if you haven't already. He will do a better job of recruiting visitors at this point. It did what it was supposed to do. I've personally seen martins become agitated with it and others have reported the same. Some peopl...

Re: Persistent House Sparrow~~~

I only recommend this as a last ditch effort. If you have tried everything else you can use a sticky glue mouse trap. However, to do it as safe as possible you need to get something to make a reducer so martins cannot fit into the opening. I have cut a hole in a plastic cottage cheese lid and use th...

Re: SY birds in good numbers.

That's good news. I will have to wait another week or two to see exactly what is going on with my colony. With the ups and downs of the martins that left and came back I don't have a real accurate count. The last nest check I had just over 20 definite nests and had about another 20 cavities that had...

Re: SY Has Arrived & TS Wars

I still from time to time see an adult martin enter into a TS gourd, even though the martin has it's own gourd. I haven't seen it happen at dark though. As far as moving your TS gourd I think I would leave it as is. You are about right in that sweet spot. If you move it a little too far then the TS ...

Re: Subadults in northern Illinois

By the time the SY's arrive many landlords don't get excited about making the report. You can look on the scout pages and see the number of SY reports is a fraction of the ASY reports. I would open them now and if you get other species looking in it close it off for a day or two or until you see mar...

Re: We had 30 martins, now have 3

The ones that you say died, did you find them dead or just assume they are dead because they are gone? I had a weird experience last week, a first for me. I had about 60 martins here last Friday and Saturday morning it got around freezing for an hour or so and then at sun up temps climbed back up. T...

Re: More Martins just showed up

As said above SY martins are arriving in your part of the country. If you have the means and want to expand, you could add some more cavities and they would likely be occupied. It is not super common to get 100% occupancy, you could leave the 4 gourds up and maybe only get 3 pair a year, and next ye...

Re: Cold/Cool weather questions.

I was out in the yard today trying to finish a project before work and there was a lot of action around the housing. I have a feeling some SY's arrived today, everything was jumping a lot more than normal. I'll be able to check more closely tomorrow.

I haven't seen any yet at my colony in Indiana. I would guess TN should be in the prime right now, especially with temps warming up in this part of the country.

Re: Cold/Cool weather questions.

Not sure but I have an update. This past weekend when I checked in the cavities I just peaked inside most of them thinking I might find one stuffed with martins. Today there was still less then 20 martins at my site so this afternoon I lowered all the housing and opened each cavity, thinking there m...
