Darn Starlings breaching Conley IIs

After changing out all of my gourds to Conley II entrances last year, I was so smug and complacent, thinking I wouldn't have to worry about those darn Starlings anymore. WRONG! Yesterday I thought I saw a Starling going in a gourd from a ways off but I talked myself out of believing my eyes. Today, ...

Linda, I have a feeding platform that they will NOT use so I am putting crickets and handwarmers in gourd. Like you said it is very difficult for me simply because on the one rack where I have only three gourds (it is the heaviest and is telescoping) is the cavity where my single female is spending ...

Be careful on that ladder, Emil. I almost took a tumble this morning, putting crickets in a gourd. I was in a hurry, and because the gourd my PM claimed for her own is on the rack with the heavy pole (and my fingers were freezing and I thought I would have trouble getting the rack back up by myself)...

I have a lone female that arrived last week in warmer weather. She is snuggled up inside her Troyer with a 24 hr. handwarmer I got at Academy. I put crickets on the porch and in the tunnels as she would fly away when I flung the crickets and no way would she try the scrambled eggs. At the moment she...

Lane, You know me, I couldn't stand it and went out and got the 24 hour handwarmers at Academy. Tried flinging crickets but she flew away so I put them on the porch of the gourd. Not sure if she ate them or not. But the next couple of days are going to be rough. I did not see her go into her gourd t...

Lane, My PM "visitor" is spending the night now. Just the one though and it's a female. I've never had a Martin this early in the season and I've never had a female Martin first. It is a year of first's for me! :) Do you think we really need to put in handwarmers in the gourds in our neck of the woo...

I've only seen one so far. My neighbor claims to have had two on his gourd rack (though I hesitate to put much stock in his observations as he regularly mistakes Starlings for Martins (hee, hee) :???: ). I'm not usually an early riser so I'm not sure if the one I saw is still around (when I did see ...

I usually do what Sparky does. Though I understand the logic of what Scott and Emil do. They are probably right, but I am a horrible shot and I just put off the distasteful task of trapping and killing as long as possible. Yep, I'm a whimp!

I knew you guys would be ready! Please, don't heap on any more guilt. :???: All kidding aside, I usually don't like to open cavities up too early because then I have to be vigilant about making sure the bluebirds stay away and, of course, once you open up - the war with the sparrows is ON. So, in th...

early arrival and the perils of procrastination

I've been doing a lot of "talking" about getting ready for Martin season -what I'm going to do, how I'm going to do it - but thinking I had at least another two weeks before the first scouts arrived in my neighborhood, nothing was actually getting done. In my own defense, the weather has not been co...

Before he passed away my dad had an old round wooden house with two levels and 24 compartments. Dad never cleaned the house but each year he had PMs. Just after the Martins would go in and get settled for the night, the bats would begin to come out of some of the compartments. This happened for two ...

David, Glad you are getting things set up. I live in Bush - a few miles north of Mandeville - and saw my first scout this morning! He was sitting on one of the perches of my lowered housing. I couldn't believe my eyes! I've never seen a scout this soon and didn't have my housing ready. I had to go o...

Tim,
I'm sure you must be sad about taking down the houses from your old site. Did you sell it yet? I hope if you do the new owners will care for your Martins.

Best of luck to you at your new site!

I checked the posts but no one has actually "witnessed" a blue-jay take the babies. It was just a theory and a hunch. My Barnswallow pair have started a new nest in a different nestcup on the porch. They seem to have forgotten about the trauma but were WISE enough to move from the old nestcup. I jus...

If it IS a snake, is there anything I can do about it? Anything I can put in the garden around my porch that would deter them? I have fiberglass round posts going up to the ceiling so I suppose I could put bird netting there but the brick wall also goes right up to the ceiling and if they can climb ...

I'm not sure what kind of bird it was and, no, I didn't see it with a baby in its beak. The nestcup is near the top of the porch on siding but there is brick under the siding on the wall where I suppose a snake could climb up, though it would have to hang sideways for a good 10 feet (to get to the f...

Congratulations on your first pair! As far as the starlings go, you simply must have SREH entrances. Voila, no more prolem with them. :) The sparrows (evil little heathen devils  ) are a constant annoyance and threat to our colonies and must be dealt with as they appear on the scene. I find th...
